Bad Signal Vol. 1

Sonek – Hit the Floor EP (Coming exclusively to Juno 3rd December)

After a couple of successful collabs with Funkinright, it’s time for Sonek to stretch his legs, and release his debut BBP EP. And he doesn’t disappoint. 

Kicking it all off is the lead track, ‘Hit the Floor’. This is a heavy hitter, dropping with some sweeping basses, and tucking a subtle funky guitar, synths and vocal stabs nicely behind to bring it all to life. 

Simplicity is the key for the next track, and it packs a punch. ‘Thinking about you’ , starts nice and chilled, with a smooth synth, building up with the main vocal and dropping into a banging beat, accompanied with a bassline that brings a bit of screwface with it. 

‘Ain’t it Funky’, gets down and dirty, with its’ super funky guitar stabs, gritty bass, and a drum groove the greats of funk would be proud of.  

Rounding it all off is ‘Got the Wildstyle’. Sonek brings the tempo a but down, but keeps it big and beefy, with some serious kicks and snares, wild horns, cut-up vocals, and a drop to make you feel that bass. 

All-in-all, if you like your funky beats beefed up and bassy, this is the release for you.

What a vibrant collection we have here from the team over at Big Fat Mama Beats, as they assemble their team to deliver a sizzling box of breakbeat remixes, under the 'Big Fat Remixes' title. Opening up, Mr Bristow arrives with the colourful horn flutters and metallic bass stabs of 'Body Roll', which kicks us off in a groovy zone, followed by the almost ska-like drum licks and glittering guitar scats of 'I Want Your Soul' from PulpFusion. From here, Sir-Vere delivers a spacey backdrop of blippy basslines and euphoric horn toots on 'Beneath My Skin', next to Nathan Green, who turns up the pace for the unpredictable percussive switch ups of 'Breakout', before One Dead Jedi arrives for a fiery finale. This month, I'm proud to present a project that I feel has a lot of unique characteristics along with a great groove and bounce- The Combinator! Made with love with a surprising amount of Moog sounds, this is kind of my ode to my little Moog Sub 37. Or is it pronounced Moog?

The Combinator

Italian producer Freedust is all about the funk-soul and the breaks blended with some lighthearted vocals that makes a sound that&rsquo;s is both classic and new. The sounds of Freedust is just the type of music we can&rsquo;t resist here at BBP - so when Mako &amp; Mr Bristow brought forward their epic big beat remix of My New Sunglasses - we did not think twice to get all over this project.
To complete the package we brought in 2 veterans in the funky breaks scene: BadboE &amp; Dj B-Side to do their funky thing on a party-breaks remix.
My New Sunglasses is the title track of Freedust&rsquo;s debut album from 2021 by the same name and features some classic grooves and some sweet vocals from Swedish singer Lisa Widmark.
On the remix front Mako &amp; Mr Bristow has captured the essential samples of the original and added some big bouncy beats and made it their own. BadboE &amp; B-Side has brough the track to the dancefloors with some ghetto vibes and human beatbox beats.

We don`t do big posts often and we've kept this under wraps for a long time and its been really hard to not spill the beans.  But its finally release day and its truly our lifes honour to have been asked to do an official remix for Toots and the Maytals.

We`ve been listening to their music since we were kids due to our dad being a big fan, and we`ve heard so many remixes of this song in raves over the years and honestly we have loved them all but because of that it made it really difficult to put our own spin on it.

Moreso while we were writing and constantly rewriting this tune trying to put abit of ourselves into it, maybe trying a little to hard at times, toots sadly passed away on September 11th 2020 💔

A blow felt by many cultures of people who appreciated and recognised the solid gold standard he and his band had set for ska and reggae music worldwide.

This remix then became almost impossible to finish due to pressure in our own minds to deliver somthing worthy. It honestly drove us abit over the edge and we deleted various attempts. It was only when we reminded ourselves after having a chance meeting with him at Glastonbury afew years ago after playing a set after them, that Toots did his own thing, they were a band with raw power, their live set was amazing, we sat at the side of the stage  in awe of the energy they still had decades into their career. 

Toots had a power of command on the mic, a true entertainer, he owned that stage in his own way, in the same way their recordings stand the test of time, with raw soul and fearlessness. So we rewrote it again with this in mind, from a rawer angle, we tried to create a remix that should be played out live and enjoyed loud with toots vocals and Reese basses working together as one.

I can't say if we succeeded, but our intentions were good and if you'd like to hear it, it went live yesterday and we cant lie, its been a tough year for musician's and we would appreciate your support on this one.

Thank you Jungle Cakes & Trojan for the oppurtunity and thank you for the music Toots, may you rest in power 💚
