004 of our series is curated and mixed by prominent Vancouver DJ Steph Tsunami. An absolute energy field behind the decks, I was introduced to her at at Valhalla Festival and was very impressed with how versatile she was and how seamless her mixes were. A line-up staple in Vancouver’s nightlife, festival, and underground scenes, Steph has played some of Vancouver’s most notable venues such as Celebrities, Red Room, Fortune Sound Club and The Waldorf, as well as events such as Contact Music Festival and Monstercat Compound… impressive! Her music style predominantly centers around drum & bass/jungle, house, techno, and breakbeat influences, although she has the ability to read and respond to a crowd of any size playing just about any genre you can think of. “In this mix, I go through a selection of newer and some older classic d&b and jungle tracks. I play a lot of different styles in my sets and never stick to one particular sound, but what I am really inspired by lately are 90’s hardcore/ravey sounds and complex breakbeat patterns that are dark and hit hard. I’ve been really into bass/club-type stuff with chopped-up vocal samples as well and it really excites me to see a lot more of these styles played more around Vancouver and BC. Lately, I’ve noticed people having more of an open mind and craving for new, diverse, and exciting music which makes me really happy as I get the opportunity to play these forward-thinking styles more and more.” - Steph
