The ‘After Times’ –– a new reality. Time passes weirdly here. Distances are strange. Gravity is different. Prepositions no longer make sense. Up is down is left is right, inside is outside, and is under and over. The after times – an Escher-esque existence.

Emily Koh (b.1986) is a Singaporean composer based in Atlanta, Georgia whose music reimagines everyday experiences by sonically expounding tiny oft-forgotten details, and is characterized by inventive explorations of the intricacies of sound. Her work also explores binary states such as extremes/ boundaries, distinguished/ ignored, and activity/ stagnation, through her unique Teochew and Peranakan Singaporean lens. An amateur multi-disciplinary artist herself, she enjoys collaborating with creatives of other specializations, especially when sound plays a central role in the project. Emily is currently Assistant Professor of Music Composition at the University of Georgia, USA.

A harp tuned in 12 EDO and another in 7 EDO allow, through the pedal system, access to various microtonal combinations (1/20, 1/10, 1/6, 1/5, 2/7, 1/4, etc.) in relation to 12 EDO, establishing tonal centers and temperaments. The first and third sections of the piece are tautological, transposed by a distance of one tone.

I recorded this in the early 1990's (James Saunders used his equipment), and it was on Chris Villar's website for a long time. I also got to perform it in London at a related book launch some years later.

On 12th December of 2002, duo Contour, in collaboration with SUONO MOBILE put on the first and only complete performance of Bryn Harrison's 'Listenings' Cycle at The Warehouse in London.  'Mantra' (Listenings V) the fifth and final movement is for solo trumpet and drone, which Bryn wrote for me in Autumn 1997. I gave the premier in 1998 at the Hebden Bridge Arts Festival, and have played about 20 times in total, internationally.

Mantra (1997) by Bryn Harrison for trumpet and drone

Having worked with the world's only 19-div trumpet player, Stephen Altoft for over 20 years (writing in 2020), one of the challenges has been how to make harmony. This has been achieved using other microtonal instruments (such as the MIDI instrument the MalletKAT), by placing the trumpet with pre-made or live electronics, by multi-tracking and by trying to write melody which has strongly implied harmony.

This last idea is what I attempted to do in my piece 'Yasser Describes his Polemic (and adds some footnotes)' of 2006 (on Soundcloud).

In Item#3, one of three 'Items', I have used some of the phrases of 'Yasser Describes his Polemic' with the live looping software ALK2. This software is designed principally for popular music, for multi-instrumentalists who generally set up a short rhythmic pattern and loop it, or continually repeat it. The feature which differentiates this software from a 'looping pedal' is that the loop sequencing can be much more subtle and potentially more complicated.

In Item#3 loops are created from single pitches through to short phrases but always with the intention of clarifying the intended harmony.

Although basically structured in 19-div the muted section towards the end is in 38-div. Item#4, due for release in September, 2020) will be 38-div structured.

Of great importance for me is that the result is 'live', so although this is a lockdown version it could, and hopefully will be performed live with one trumpet player.

Through my good friend, and duo partner Lee Ferguson, I met the composer James (‘Jake’) Romig. https://www.jamesromig.com

They are both Alumni of the University of Iowa, and Lee has championed his work ever since those days- performing chamber works in the USA, at BISYOC Summer course concerts and with the Black Forest Percussion Group. Jake also, naturally, wrote a duo Contour piece.

'MICROSONNET II, for unaccompanied trumpet, was written in December 2000 for Stephen Altoft. The work is an adaptation of a page from SONNET 2, for for solo flute. It features two pitch-strands of counterpoint -- the first a more or less standard string of twelve-tone isomorphs, the second a string of pitches produced by the modulus array, a technique derived to produce modulus-based unequal pitch repetition (providing momentary "tonicizations" of various pitches). In this work, the counterpoint between the two vastly different collections of pitches can be heard explicitly in sections where the music is actually written in two voices, and the trumpet-player must expertly juggle two lines at once.'
