Strings and Orchestral instruments composed & performed by Stephen Sherrard using the East West Symphonic Orchestra Gold library.  Guitar parts played using MusicLab's Real LPC through Native Instruments' Guitar Rig 4.  Bass from Native Instruments Kontakt through IK Multimedia Amplitude SVX.  Extra synths from Spectrasonics Omnisphere.  Extra vocal harmonies generated using Antares Harmony EFX.  Vocals, drums, percussion, some guitar, piano, and synth, from the original Howard Jones recordings.

Holding On - Free Mix selection 3

My winning mix of Bo Bice's song November.  This was for the Sennheiser/Neumann Bo Bice mixing contest.  My mix was chosen as the best mix by a panel of top industry professionals including: Al Schmitt, Tom Young, David Thoener, Karl Richardson, Tim Palmer, Greg Lukens, and Cool & Dre.  My prize for winning this competition was a $4200 Neumann U87 microphone!  Mix posted with permission.

Stereo Buss Processing:  Slate Virtual Mix Buss (Neve), API 2500 Hardware (small touch of compression, mostly to get that API Rock sound), UAD Manley Massive Passive (just a touch of added high-end air)

BASS: Inserts: Slate Tape + VCC, UAD Teletronix LA2A Gray

           1. Decapitator to H3000 Factory (subtle dist plus width)

           3. NI Guitar Rig 5 (some parallel distortion for choruses)

AD Drums Snare:  I triggered a snare and used Addictive Drums to find a matching snare sound, and just layered it subtly underneath the real snare to just get a touch more punch and definition to the snare.  Most of the snare sound is from the real snare and overheads.

OVERHEADS:  Tried to get a full kit sound, but without the cymbals getting too loud/harsh or washy.  Inserts:  Slate Tape + VCC, UAD 1176 LN Rev E, UAD Trident A Range, UAD Precision DeEsser (tame the louder cymbal hits a bit), Waves S1 Imager (narrow during verses, and the back out to just past normal width on choruses), Waves H-EQ.  Sends: Drum Smash

TOMS:  There were no separate Tom tracks, but I created my own by copying the Overhead track and then cutting out everything except the Tom hits.  This track was then layered in with the Overheads to give the Toms more punch, and so I could EQ/process the Tom hits a bit differently.  Inserts:  Slate Tape + VCC, UAD 1176 LN Rev E, Waves API 550A, UAD Little Labs VOG, SPL Transient Designer 
            Sends: 1. Ocean Way Room verb, 2. Drum Smash

DRUM BUSS:  Drum subgroups was routed through my hardware Drawmer 1968 for some compression and tube goodness

DRUM SMASH:  Some Parallel processing via send/return for the drums.  Just the Soundtoys Decapitator through the UAD 1176 LN Rev E compressor.  Nothing too drastic, but enough to give the drums a bit more bite and edge during the choruses

VOCAL:  Inserts:  Slate Tape + VCC, Cranesong Trakker (hardware compressor), Manny D Triple D (used as a dynamic EQ for a bit of de-essing and de-harsh).
Vocal Send Effects (all automated): 
1. Ocean Way Room Reverb
2. Soundtoys Echoboy to Valhalla Room - the main "live" slap echo and verb
3. Waves MannyM Delay - very short delay plus subtle use of the other effects in this plugin to give the voice a bit of extra width/depth
4. Long Delay - Soundtoys Echoboy delay to another Valhalla Room reverb

My goal with this mix was to keep it sounding fairly natural and live, without over producing it.  Biggest work was the drums and trying to bring out the toms while not making the cymbals too loud or harsh.  This song certainly wasn't calling for an over-produced studio sound, but, sometimes trying to craft a "natural" sound is almost more difficult.  The other challenge was trying to find a way to create more dynamic contrast between the verses and choruses.  Lots of automation and switching on/off effects, as well as automating EQ, was used to achieve the desired results.
