Growing up in an ex mining village. Once the hub of our community.  Now... Old Neville knows ... 🍺 


Old Neville's Black Lung

This village hewn from the coal face of the past
Still, living in the long shadow it has cast
The pitmen stood, blinking at the sun 
Knowing their time & industry was now done
Old Neville, put a woodbine to his lips
To the lads, said, “That's the end of the pits.”
Blowing smoke, he knew of one thing to do:

“Let's go down to the pub for a few!” 

[Chorus]

And those lads raised a glass, singing song after song
Wondering where the shipyards & the coal had all gone
They drank every keg in that ol’ place dry

And realised, their hometown was slowly gonna die.


And so began the great decline

No promised roses nor fine wine

The Village slept into decay

Along with hopes of brighter days

Old Neville got the old Black Lung

And never saw another sun

But he always knew just what to do:

“Let's go down to the pub for a few!”

Wondering where the shipyards & the coal had all gone
And every keg in that ol’ place, they drank until dry

On the night they realised, their hometown 
was to die.


Maggie hit the final nail
Blackened faces forever pale 
Veins of seams still run below
Crumbling arteries of long ago
The lies of Governments
 
come free & easy

As the masses chant: 

Why-don't-you-see me?

But, from beyond the grave, old Neville, sighed 
And all the pitmen who'd since died 
All knew just what to do…
