The song is believed to have originated from America's Southern Appalachian Mountains, and first appeared in print in Olive Dame Campbell and Cecil Sharp's 1917 compilation "English Folk Songs From the Southern Appalachians."

Stripped to the studs, Stephen Artemis Jr.'s brooding rendition of Cold Rain And Snow reclaims the songs early dark roots. Drawing upon his experience navigating the unvarnished realities of early adulthood in America's Rust Belt, "Cinders" reflects the region's warm beauty and cold economic undercurrent.  The song's whaling slide guitar joins the punch of a kick drum and barrels into a final crescendo.  In the end, all that is left is a fluttering ambiance like cinders rising from the ashes.  You can almost smell the campfire smoke.

Written in 2016 for a Nashville-based songstress, the song was shelved when her record stalled. During an in studio vocal warm up, Stephen unearthed the song which caught the attention of producer Brian Speaker, who suggested they record the track. Stephen's uptempo “punky-tonk” cuts straight to the chorus for three minutes of brutal self reflection.
