The Blue Vessels EP is the first part of a double album project that I am releasing across four EPs over the next year or so. The album will follow a drop of water as it makes its way from being frozen on a glacier all the way down to the depth of the ocean. The Blue Vessels EP tells the first part of the story, following the ice melting and the water making its way over and under the glacier until it escapes onto the land. Musically it is primarily within the ambient genre with elements of classical contemporary, lo-fi, drone, folk and post rock.

I really enjoyed making this track using the sounds from the Alev Lenz library '3' from Spitfire Audio. 

I only used sounds from the library along with some EQ, compression and light mastering. Hope you enjoy!

The Landing

Beacon Hill alternative singer-songwriter song about a relationship between two lovers across a battlefield at night and their attempts to communicate and keep the other safe from harm. Starting softly with acoustic piano and guitar, it adds more instrumentation such as electric guitar, drums and synthesisers as it builds, before ending with cut up and manipulated audio and samples as the instrumentation fades away.

In Time

Meltwater - A vast glacier stretches out across the top of a volcano, snow-capped and frozen. In the ablation zone the blue ice waits, gradually warming up in the heat of the sun and the heat rising from beneath. Eventually a drop of water is freed from the ice and starts to inch down the glacier.

Blue Vessels

Meltwater

Blue Vessels - A drop of meltwater makes its way across the surface of the glacier that released it. Along the network of channels and passages, the blue glacial water contrasts with the bright white ice and creates a network of possible paths and routes that mark and scar the surface.

Moulin - A blue water stream picks up speed as it heads toward a moulin, a deep, dark hole in the ice reaching down into the glacier. The water picks up speed, reaches the edge and falls into the depths. The drop is seemingly endless and weightless with no concept of direction, other than down towards the bottom.

Moulin

Entrainment - Underneath the towering glacier, the huge weight of ice slowly gouges the earth and crushes any rocks in its path as it gradually carves a valley into the new landscape.

Entrainment

Subglacial Lake - The water flowing downwards is trapped between the bedrock and the glacier’s impenetrable ice walls into a frozen lake that does not freeze. Ice crystals float through the water along with microorganisms that somehow find a way to bring life to this cold, dark environment.

Subglacial Lake

Jökulhlaup - Each drop of water entering the lake adds to the weight of the water pressing against the ice. The pressure builds as heat continues to rise from beneath until it can longer be contained by the ice around the lake. The walls cracks and the base of the glacier gives way as the water explodes out in an outburst flood. The water is free of the glacier and continues to follow the path downwards towards the sea.

Demo of Christian Henson's Tape Delay Experiment Pianobook library. 
I was trying out Christian's new Tape Delay Experiments library yesterday and a whole piece just kind of fell out of me as soon as I played the first chord - very inspirational! I really liked the imprecise nature of the delays, loops and noise, so I played everything loosely without a click or quantise in order that all the delays were randomly out of sync and this helped to create a wonderfully chaotic sounds that contrasted nicely with the simple chords and melodies. 
Only uses sounds from the library. No effects used other than a tiny bit of EQ and light mastering.

Demo of Husman Modular - Alpha Pianobook library. 
The sounds in the library reminded me of 8-Bit computers, particularly the Commodore 64 SID chip which I had a lot of experience with when making the From Bedrooms To Billions soundtrack. For this demo I made a piece of Systems Music based around patterns of increasingly shorter lengths along with some randomisation. I'm quite pleased with the result. It sounds like Synthwave being performed by a 1980s secondary school computer club, which is certainly a specific genre. Only uses sounds from the library. No effects used other than a SEM LP filter sweep for the intro and and some light mastering.

Demo of Ethanolia Pianobook library. 
Playing around with the pad and lead sounds in this library led me to make a very ambient piece. I really enjoyed using the mod wheel to crossfade between the samples, so really wanted the demo to show this off by using a series of long evolving repeated figures that go right through the samples layers and back again as the piece progresses. Only uses sounds from the library. No effects used other than a touch of mastering.

Another Vial (Ethanolia Pianobook Demo)

Demo of Isolation Collaboration Pianobook library by Dan Keen. 
I found this library to be very beautiful with lots of lovely textures and lots of lovely little details that poke through as you are playing. I found it very ethereal sounding when playing chords, so I was drawn to make quite an ambient piece. On top of an 8 bar chord pattern, I played lots of little embellishments with individual higher notes so that they come bursting through the lush chords. A the piece progresses it moves through the different layers using the expression control, which brings out more percussive and bell like tones. I really enjoyed using this library and I'm sure I continue to use it. 
The piece only uses sounds from the library. No effects used other than a touch of mastering.

Glisk (Isolation Collaboration Pianobook Demo)

Demo of King's Cross London Underground library by Kelan Rooney. 
I love libraries that are very atmospheric and full of noise from the surroundings as it immediately conjures up an environment in your mind - and you certainly get that with this library recorded on the piano in London's King's Cross Station. I like to embrace the noise with these types of libraries, so I made a demo with lots of notes with the pedal down to really let the atmospherics swirl as it is playing. Then it ends with simple big chords played and held so you can hear all the noises from the tube station. Brilliant! 
The piece only uses sounds from the library. No effects used other some reverb at the beginning and end to so that it feels like you are walking towards and then away from someone playing the piano as you walk by, and then a final touch of mastering.

Passing People Passing By (King's Cross London Underground Pianobook Demo)

Demo of The Lamp Pianobook library by Floh (Florian Hirschmann). 
I really like sounds that are made from things like this. The dull bell-like tone from the lamp sampled makes for an instrument that lies somewhere between an electric piano and a steel drum along with a little dose of DX7 style bells - very nice! There is a similar sound in Omnisphere made from a bowl that I have used on a number of tracks over the years.

Playing around with it yielded this nice demo track. For which I used The Lamp and The Lamp Pad sounds. I only used sounds from the library. No effects used other than some EQ and and some light mastering.
