'The Moon and the Bonfires' was the last romance of Cesare Pavese, the greatest Italian novelist of the first half of the 20th century: to him is dedicated the song. Depression, the failure of a brief love affair with an actress and political disillusionment led him to his suicide by an overdose of barbiturates on 1950, August 27.
