In 2010 a clothing company "B3arfruit" released a compilation project titled "Fruit Cocktail" featuring the likes of Trip Lee, Andy Mineo, Stephen The Levite, Mark Arthur, Phanatik, Leah Smith and many more. 2 years later (2012) I decided to remix the project but never released it. Well, 2 years later after finding the files I decided to release it in full to the public. Enjoy! I had fun making this at the time.

9. Stephen The Levite - Faithfulness

Statistics show abortion is the number one killer of blacks in America and millions–both women and men–wrestle with guilt years after the deed is done. Lamp Mode’s lyrical theologian, Stephen the Levite, opens up about one of his children being aborted in high school in a just-released promotional video titled, “Truth Is…”

“Truth is, I got a girl pregnant when I was in high school, and she ended up aborting the baby. And if that child was still alive, it’d be a teenager by now,” said the introspective artist in the mini documentary-style visual directed by Scouts Honor Media.

“And that’s a reality I have to live with. That was something I had to think about when I was writing one of the songs for this album.”

Stephen the Levite, a devoted husband and father, describes Can I Be Honest?, which releases November 18, as “the hardest album I’ve had to write.” It is also said to be his most transparent, sharing both the highs and lows of life and love—the latter being the focal point of his second single, “143,” featuring Chris Jackson.

Along the lines of “S.O.S.”—A previous lyrical ode to his wife Trisha—“143” (An incorporation of the pager code 143, which means I Love You), serves as a fresh public tribute to his “bae.”

“Who said love songs are an R&B thing? I’ll do more in the Lord’s name if it’s pleasing,” rhymes Stephen the Levite, real name Darrell Bell, reminding listeners that the open admiration of his bride is biblical in origin.

“There’s proof in the Proverbs that my public praise is proper, personal pleasure, and props to God’s work,” he adds in one of the lines of the single that offers a glimpse inside his imperfect, yet God-honoring, union. As the release date of Can I Be Honest? draws nearer, Stephen the Levite continues pulling back layers of the complex project until the day arrives when the full spectrum of all he wishes to say is revealed.

In the early 1930s a group of literary enthusiast, including theologians & philosophers like C.S. Lewis, formed an informal literary group where members could freely trade ideas, share their works, and enjoy fellowship with like minds.  This association of writers and thinkers was known as “The Inklings”.  In 2016, four creative artists, whose literary work is accompanied by the beat, have resurrected this moniker, looking to share their work, and message, with the world.  

Florida based Lamp Mode Recordings artists, Hazakim, consisting of brothers Mike and Tony Wray, are best known as the Messianic Jewish voice in the world of hip-hop culture.  After releasing the critically acclaimed Theophanies, their follow up album entitled Son of Man cracked two Billboard charts, landing a top ten spot.  Now expanding their horizons in this collaborative effort, they are eager to up the ante of creative expression while continuing to direct the listener to the Messiah.

Jesus Peace is a NYC-based Gospel hip-hop duo consisting of band members Randy Mason and Damion B. Sanders. The name "Jesus Peace" is a play on the term "Jesus piece" which refers to the gaudy medallions depicting Jesus’ crucifixion worn by today's flashy mainstream rappers. The name Jesus Peace was chosen because of its relatability to the hip hop community and like a rapper's "Jesus piece" on his chest, it makes a bold statement for Christ.

The Inklings’ first public offering is “Hands Up”; a smooth-yet-hype ode to classic east coast hip-hop.  The beat is by the legendary emcee/producer Peace 586, whose resume, stretching back to the 1980s, includes classic works with Freedom of Soul & the Tunnel Rats.  With Peace on the beat, the Inklings present a witty wordplay filled, catchy record that tells the listener to surrender, with hands up, to the Lord.

“I started writing just to get good enough to battle a rapper in my high school that I felt was disrespecting the craft.” “I was into the culture – the four elements – B-boying, MCing, Graffiti Art, and DJing he was into getting attention/showing off…I guess you could say he was into rap and I was into hip-hop.”

30-yr-old Darrell Bell, better known as Stephen the Levite (STL), is a husband, father, community leader, and Christian emcee. The California native is a son of the hip-hop movement, a student of the culture, and a leader in a new genre of underground hip-hop music with a Christian message. Growing up in the era when Gangsta rap and East Coast/West Coast rivalries were dominating the urban music scene, STL was a bit different from many of his peers. Taking the time to delve into the origins of hip-hop with his Asian-American, Latino and Caucasian friends while in high school, fleeting music trends didn’t sway STL – his passion was tied to the core tenants of the genre.

Heavily influenced by some of his favorite rappers at the time – Heavy D, Wu Tang Clan, Mob Deep, Common, and others – STL drew more and more into the music. Never one to freestyle in battles, STL began writing consistently at the age of 15 to hone his craft. The ruggedness, artistry, and competitiveness of hip-hop captivated him – suddenly the music had become an innate expression of who he was.

Upon graduation from high school, after getting saved in his late teens, STL enrolled in Calvary Chapel Bible College. It was there that he begin rapping in a group called Redeemed Thought, spreading the knowledge he gained from his classes to diverse audiences. From the beginning of his career, Stephen the Levite chose to be direct about his faith in his lyrics. After seeing a musical group perform which did not disclose their faith as a driving force behind their music, STL determined that he would be upfront about his musical intentions to his audiences. STL became engrossed in the music that Philadelphia based Christian hip-hop group Cross Movement was doing – the group’s work would become his standard for excellence and a model for his own career.

After feeling led spiritually to move to Philadelphia, Stephen the Levite along with his group mate muzeONE set out to make the city of brotherly love their new home town. It wasn’t long before Stephen the Levite became a part of the Christian Hip-Hop movement, linking up with fellow lyricists, singers, producers, and more. He soon signed to Lamp Mode Recordings and quickly made a name for himself both in the city and around the nation.

Stephen the Levite has a burden on his heart for this generation. “I want to see the family get straight. It all starts with men being responsible, taking care of their kids, being a part of churches and living as upright men. Those are the building blocks of a healthy community.” When asked why the name, Stephen the Levite his answer is simple – “Stephen, the martyr is my hero – he didn’t have a title or prestige, but he stood up for God and people responded to the message he delivered. That is the type of person I want to model, the legacy I want to leave.”
