As one half of the acclaimed Tomorrowland duo, Stephen Baker has become quite expert at fusing low end frequencies with filtered guitar arrangements that evoke expansive scenes cast in warm hues. Now he strikes out on his own with Addisko and the focus is sharper and more synthetic. Each sound on Wo Hop stands in high-contrast to its neighbor and although various strains of dub, hip-hop, synthetic funk, and acid collide, the final impression is of a cogent new sound.

Ariel Kalma is inspired by rhythms, melodies and grooves from various cultures, ambient atmospheres, modal music, native instruments and nature. Ariel likes to experiment with music: mix traditional sounds with modern arrangements, use electronica and special effects, play circular breathing on winds and didgeridoo, create original sounds from synthesizers. Ariel blends styles of music to produce original compositions with flavours of his own. His songs touch deep feelings of the search for simple truth in a metaphorical poetry.

During his study of Electronics, Computer Science, Music and Art at Paris University, Ariel Kalma was also performing with several bands and touring the world, visiting Asia, Africa, Japan, Canada and Europe, always listening to, sometimes playing with, the music and the people: different scales, colours of sound, timing and rhythms.

Sigo con mi exploración de los diferentes caminos del techno, que ya no es techno, es electrónica pausada o acelerada, depende del rango de bpms que se utilice, de ahí el nombre de este mix, "90 x 180". Los tempos son tan lejanos que se juntan y se pueden mezclar, pareciendo en ocasiones Drum and bass (180)y en otras dub techno hiperlento (90).
El resultado carece de etiquetas pero creo que es algo personal e hipnótico.

I continue my exploration of the different paths of Techno. In this mix, I wanted to explore the different speeds in which you can find music that could still be categorised as Techno. The title, 90x180 is a reflection of how tempos blend to a point where your mind feels alienated with the rhythm. Slow dub blending with very fast rhythms harmonically fighting each other. The result, hard to classify, is a very hypnotic and personal set.

utopian @ 90x180_mix

It is undeniable that we are living in uncertain times. For those of us failing to fit the patriarchal neoliberalist mould, we have lost hope in the future. We can see capitalism is not working but we cannot yet envisage an alternative. In a world where security is no longer feasible, the only constant we can rely on is change. Regardless of one’s point of reference, we can understand that every aspect of life, physical and mental is in flux and perhaps this transience is the only thing we can depend on.

This month we have invited @jinsynth to ruminate on these ideas and create an hour of relief from these anxieties. A temporary suspension of reality, where the listener can speculate on alternate modes of existence that reject hetero-patriarchal systems of oppression.

Jin is a DJ and synthesizer performer who mixes elements of ambient and techno. Her performances focus on creating artistic abstraction through the use of experimental sounds and analogue noises, to provide audiences with a deeper perception of music.
