Contours - Eyes Down (STW Premiere)

After more than a decade DJing, promoting and helping cultivate Sydney’s broader Soulful beats scene, Australian Producer Edseven returns in a big way. 

Inaugurating Midnight Swim’s catalogue with the first release, Edseven’s ‘Broadside’ single sees the Producer upping the tempo and bringing a collective of heavy-hitting friends along for a dip. Beat Spacek, Peret Mako and Chasm all offer unique yet faithful renditions of the original in this hearty remix package that’s bound to be on high rotation at peak time and at sleep time. 

‘Broadside’ is that rare, uncategorisable type of mid-tempo House tune that ends up in a different place to where it started; a Soul sample is faded out giving way to a warm percussive beat before the filtered chords get to work, providing ample length and breadth to keep the groove going for the song’s five minute duration - it’s that perfect balance of broken, wonky and funky vibes that leave you wanting more. 

Steve Spacek’s Beat Spacek project (Ninja Tune) puts the soul loop to great effect, toughening it up with light Acid twinges and bringing it in to early Floating Points territory. The perennial Soul man has recently been rinsing his version during his tour across Europe to great effect in clubs and on radio. Peret Mako’s hypnotic late night Deep House burner adds a whole new vocal hook on top of the track, stretching out the vibes, adding more layers and sounds while building to a crescendo. Making this one absolutely essential for the Balearic warehouse set. With a nod to Edseven’s Hip Hop roots, fellow Sydney producer Chasm chops the sample and works with the rhythm to create a mix suitable for Hip Hop, Beats and Digital Dancehall sets.

The South London staple, @Churchuk, should be known to every one of our followers. Headed by its equally distinguished boss, Seb Wildblood, the label has managed to carve itself into its own unique niche within the underground. Developing a sound all their own, Church has become the premier destination for sultry, hazy, jazz-infused house music. As of late, the music has been getting even more sophisticated, and, at times takes a step away from house altogether. With releases from producers such as the young up-and-comer, Ben Hauke, a mini LP from Nicholas, and of course the critically acclaimed, first full length album for the label from Laurence Guy, we're always eagerly awaiting the next thing Church throws at us.

"It Rains Here" is that next thing, and it's the debut album from under the radar Manchester talent, @Yadavasoflute. We can only assume the title of the album is referring to the oft-dreary weather of his home city. Not to fear though, this album is just the perfect cure for those rainy day blues.

UK based Contours and Yadava team up to release the "Cosmic Echoes" EP, built over numerous jam sessions fusing live percussion, bass, drum machine, synthesizers and field recordings to create a raw EP full of soul and warmth. Released September 4, jointly by Flumo and ANMA Records.

Both Contours and Yadava have been on our radar for a while so we are happy to see them display so great chemistry on this beautiful EP. Destined to sell out, so don't sleep!

Since 2012, Melbourne’s Rohan Newman has recorded as Roland Tings, bringing his now trademark organic touch to the dance and electronic community. Following last year's sun-soaked album Salt Water, the producer returns with a new EP, First Wave. Rather than following suit of the highly collaborative album that preceded it, First Wave signals a return to Newman’s instinctive and solitary approach to songwriting, the same ethos that guided him while crafting his earliest Roland Tings material.

Drawing inspiration from his coastal surroundings, First Wave is liquid, malleable and oil-slick. Opener “Lights on the Headland” pulses with acid chirps and inky synths. “Down The Line” and “Orange Circle” take a softer focus, their melodies peeking out from a humid haze like sunbursts through the marine layer. The title track captures the essence of the EP — a feeling of euphoric come-up — before the closing track “Leaving” brings the pace down, gently undulating at a slower tempo as if underwater.

The sonic throughlines on First Wave are clear: drum machines and 80s snare, swirling pads with rolls of bass, and glittering arpeggios that channel shimmering sea creatures under the water’s surface. Like liquid, it all seamlessly flows, but it’s an undercurrent of intuition and melody that unites the music as distinctly Roland Tings.
