Assigned with the task of reshaping one of Conclave’s most kinetic tracks, Love Injection Fanzine/Records extended family members Craig Handfield and Brandon Weems of musclecars’s “Alati Yeye Chege (Remix)” shrewdly emphasizes the soulful intimacy at the heart of the original. Gradually building from congas, the duo unfurls a joyous and percolating four-on-the-floor groove, piano and synth lines nimbly darting about Cesar’s layered vocals with the finesse of the dancers it will surely inspire. Best of all, though, is a surprise false ending that gives way to an exhilarating coda – an eruption of percussion and flute that closes out the track.

Cellar Sessions Vol 10: DOKO

Ambient synths, a deep bassline and trickling plucks form ‘The Prelude’, this is the introduction to an LP oozing character, told by Allergy Season and Heist artist John Barera & Beats In Space and Haus of Altr affiliate Brian Abelson. 

This is a varied album, touching on groove-laden dance tracks like ‘I Was There’ and ‘I Am Free’, to the sluggish trip of ‘I Believe’. Summarising the LP perfectly, ‘The Return’ closes out the release with the infectious strum of a bass guitar and carefully designed layers of melody that, much like the rest of the full-length, speaks endlessly to the imagination.

Once dubbed one of the “New York techno scene’s hardest working DJs” by Resident Advisor, John Barera has honed his craft via his Cross Street label, as well as appearances on labels such as Soul Clap and Dolly. His style ranges from techno, electro through to house and acid, and has seen him grace the halls of influential international clubs like Panorama Bar, Fabric, Razzmatazz, and many more.

Brian Abelson is responsible for co-producing and writing records on labels like Beats in Space, Haus of Altr, Sinderlyn and more, all while holding down a residency at New York’s celebrated Bossa Nova Civic Club. After a recent glimpse at collaboration via their 2022 ‘Myrtle Ave Wetlands’ on Sorry Records, NYC scene stalwarts Abelson and Barera now team up for an LP rooted in left-field house music, combining their wealth of influences and experience to deliver a quality vinyl album full of unique artistic expression.

Sounds Familiar is the world-renowned artist agency, label, and record store that is synonymous with quality and heart. This year Sounds Familiar is celebrating a decade in dance music by releasing 3 LP’s. The series entitled “Familiar Sounds”  dropped its first volume in April and featured Dego, Kamma & Masalo, Aleqs Notal Feat Anu, Kai Alcé, Retromigrationand Hugo LX.  On the second volume Sounds Familiar continues to join the musical dots with artists from the roster spanning elastic acid house and candle-lit piano jazz. Familiar Sounds Volume 2 features another heavyweight lineup that includes the mighty Kaidi Tatham, Carista, Gigi Testa, Zopelar, Alex From Tokyo and K15, all on a 12” vinyl album that reaches all corners of the roster’s electronic jazz-influenced sound.
 
Kaidi Tatham’s upstart summer anthem ‘Misguided Youts’ kicks off. Built on a piano vamp and an infectious horn line, the track eases into a consummate piece of future fusion, stirring the melting pot of London’s jazz and broken beat heritage into the kind of soulful jam that has rightly earned him his legendary reputation. Taking a deeper dive, Carista tweaks the dials to deliver a slice of rubbery four-to-the-floor dancefloor business. Rattling snap-back snares give her track ‘Love Me Right’ a kind of early hours dynamism, the dream-like vocal sample drifting across a room of loose and swaying bodies. Gigi Testarounds out the A-side with shuffling outernational house track ‘Summer Snow.’ Integrating his passion for global rhythms, the Rush Hour affiliate, and Organica Record Shop owner channels the shimmering opulence of the Amalfi coast on what is an indulgent boat party of lush pads and sun-dappled melodies.
 
On the flip Zopelar delivers the jazzy, disco-infused house of ‘Arapuca.’ There’s a skittish energy to Zopelar’s offering, which wriggles and jives between muted trumpet improvisations, George Duke’s ‘A Brazilian Love Affair’ and the kind of in-the pocket synth work he is known to have among his arsenal of musical skills!  Alex From Tokyo weaves in the stripped back influence of his former Berlin home into the techno-pop landscape of his Japanese upbringing, heading in to go out on the cosmic club cut ‘Wa Galaxy.’ Closing out the LP is DJ, producer, and man of many monikers, the inimitable K15. Putting on his jazz hat most associated with his work as Culross Close, ‘Autumn’ is a solo piano ballad that brings the exuberance of high summer to a reflective end, demonstrating just how varied and open-minded the world of Sounds Familiar is.

The result of this boundless creative pairing is the EP ‘How It Feels to be Loved’, The title track and its instrumental version are pure joy, taking the listener to new heights of feeling and passion. ‘Love Everlasting’ keeps the rhythm going on strong, combining inspired vocal work with expertly placed instrumental feels, with the piano and the claps doing much to shift the soul into heaven. To wrap things up, we have ‘So Captivated’, in both its original guise and in remix form, courtesy of 80s Babies, and this cut leaves the record ending on a real high. After all the energy we have become accustomed to, we are now treated to a slow burning piece of excellence, a tune that elegantly slides across the floor, encouraging all to smile, believe and be happy. Its a fitting end to an album dripping with vibration and creativity.

Thank you, @houseofafandi, for making this happen. I truly hope we can raise enough funds to help those in need. The last few weeks have been more than devastating for the Palestinian people. When you see people who look and speak like you getting massacred, it really tears a part of you. But I do believe the West is starting to see what us Arabs have always seen from a very young age.

"Akbar Zag," which directly translates to "the biggest shit" The word 'zag' is more frequently used in the GCC as "Kul zag," which often just means "shut up talking and eat shit" . This song was originally intended to be part of my album, but the rhythm and feeling felt more appropriate for this compilation. After seeing so many fabricated lies, you can't help but wonder that this is the worst imaginable khara "Shit". So كل زق! (Kul zag!)
