Day for Night places Australia’s boldest queer artists in a durational performance wunderkammer. Part exhibition, part performance art go-go, and part T-dance, Day for Night delivers creativity right to heart of the Mardi Gras party season, continuing Performance Space’s thirty-year commitment to queer performance. As the exhibition draws to a close and day turns to night, the space transforms into a large-scale dance party with Stereogamous at the helm. You better get involved lovers: FEB 13 the 15th! 

Curated by Jeff Khan (Performance Space) and Emma Price (The Kingpins), and scored in collaboration with futurist electronic musicians Stereogamous (Paul Mac and Jonny Seymour), Day for Night sets you free to roam through the exhibition, encountering the performances on your own terms. As the large-scale dance party emerges, the artists flick the switch on their works and you experience it all in an electric new context. Woo hoo!

The key cultural event of Mardi Gras 2014, Day for Night features an awe-inspiring line up of artists including Justin Shoulder (The River Eats, 2013), Alex Clapham and Penelope Benton (I Want Candy, Underbelly 2013), burlesque supernova Lillian Starr, durational performance art hero Frances Barrett with Samuel Bruce, cLUB bENT veteran Dean Walsh, Sydney dance stalwart Martin del Amo,and explosive all-grrrl collective Hissy Fit.

Music is a universal language that brings people together, and it can enhance the atmosphere of any environment. In a gay leather bar where patrons are adorned in black leather straps and hanky codes, nakedness, or the homosexual bath house where the uniform is a towel is where the stereogamous remix of "Motorcycle" adds to the sensual and erotic ambiance.

When it comes to selecting music for a gay leather bar, it is important to keep in mind the preferences of the audience. The patrons of this particular bar may enjoy this song that is edgy and provocative, with a heavy bass and a pulsating beat. Blending genres like techno, bath house, and electronica are appropriate choices as this track has a dark and intense feel that matches the atmosphere of the clandestine bar.

In addition to the genre of music, the tempo and rhythm can be important factors to consider. A fast-paced beat can get the blood pumping and set the mood for a night of dancing and debauchery. However, this slower and more sleazy and sensual track is just as effective in creating a seductive atmosphere.

It is also important to consider the lyrics of the songs being played. While some patrons may not pay close attention to the words being sung, others may find them to be important. The latest episode in the ongoing site specific soundscape series for the bathrooms at The Bearded Tit on Gadigal Land, Sydney. The Bearded Tit is an LGBTIQA+ bar and gallery safe space which has been a sacred place for community to gather, dance, snack, drink and watch shows, bands and performance art. 

Composed specifically for the intimate sound system of The Bearded Tit’s gender-neutral bathrooms, this site-specific work is a drifting, layered soundscape—part séance, part tone poem, part meditation, part sonic embrace.

In this space between stalls and states of being, sound leaks and lingers. Field recordings, whispered histories, spectral cover versions, and spoken spells are woven together to create an ephemeral listening portal—something between memory and music, sculpture and scent. It’s a space to pause, to float, to feel heard without speaking.

This isn’t music in the traditional sense. It doesn’t demand your full attention or a paid seated audience. It slips into the edges of your awareness, inviting not hearing, but listening. It is sound art: invisible yet immersive, unfolding in time like breath or weather.

Inspired by the spirit of John Cage’s silences, the chaos of Russolo’s noise machines, and the legacy of queer voices who sang, screamed, and shimmered before us—this piece holds both the noise of now and the ghosts of then, them and anthem 

Here, in a bathroom turned temple, the sound asks you to stay—and subconsciously to notice. To sense the sacred in the incidental. To remember that even flushes, faucets, footsteps, flatulence and fragments are part of our queer chorus.
