Pioneer of the global bass movement, producer, percussionist and DJ, Maga Bo returns with Amor (É Revolução), his first solo album in 10 years, furthering his on-going exploration of Afro Brazilian music, set for release on his own label Kaxambu Records on May 27th. The debut track Axé para o Bará, a collaboration with  the late candomblé priest, Mestre Antonio Carlos de Xangô, is released today.
 
Internationally renowned for his production work on labels like Ninja Tunes, Tru Thoughts, ZZK and Soundway, Maga Bo has long been blowing the bass bins with his global mesh of digital roots music. On Amor (É Revolução) it's to Brazil - where the US-born/naturalized Brazilian has been residing since the late 1990's - the energy is channeled, on a powerful homage to the country's and his own, rich and spiritual connection to the drum.
 
Collaborating with a veritable cast of singers, musicians and percussionists, contemporary and traditional, from north and south, Maga Bo reconnects with some of his peers he worked with on his 2012 Quilombo Do Futuro record; artists like Russo Passapusso and Roberto Barreto from BaianaSystem (Salvador), singer Rosângela Macedo (São Paulo) and rapper Bnegão from Planet Hemp (Rio De Janeiro). He forges new connections with key names in Brazil's contemporary scenes like Felipe Cordeiro (Belém) and Jeru Banto (Rio de Janeiro), and introduces to the world to some percussion and Afro Brazilian musical purveyors like Mestre Antonio Carlos de Xangô (Porte Alegre).
 
The debut track Axé Para o Bará features the late singer Mestre Antonio Carlos de Xangô, a male priest of the Candomblé religion known in Brazil as a 'pai-de-santo'. The songs features am incessant, galloping rhythm section, a chorus of female call and response vocals answering the Mestre’s prayer and all joined together with Maga Bo’s trademark electronic production, retaining the natural essence and spirt of the music. 
 
Amor (É Revolução) has taken Maga Bo years to complete, with multiple visits to studios, dwellings and temples across Brazil, always with his digital backpack, a modest recording set up, ready to record. 
 
In recent years Maga Bo has been busy touring the world as a DJ, remixing artists like Mulatu Astatke, Bomba Stereo, Asian Dub Foundation and BaianaSystem and is currently in the production stage of a new album with his project in collaboration with artist João Selva and dancer Tereza Azevedo,  Sociedade Recreativa (Jarring Effects).

This project marks the launch of a brand new music label,  Kafundó Records, by the two Rio de Janeiro based
Brazilian music experts, Maga Bo and  Wolfram Lange (of the Soundgoods blog.). It also marks the initiation of a new partnership for Dutty Artz. We hope that this horizontal partnership between two independent labels will serve as a model for international collaboration in the global music industry. The music presented also reflects the desire to usher in a new Brazilian social reality…

“Kafundó” means a far away and isolated place in Brazilian Portuguese. Beyond the favela/asfalto binary that exists in Brazil’s urban areas, there are alternative spaces that exist both within and outside the city.  These places are “far away” from traditional Brazilian social politics. The most commonly recognized such place is the Afro-Brazilian “quilombo” the Brazilian version of a maroon community or a “palenque”. This third space within the Brazilian social geography is the source material of inspiration for many of the songs on Kafundó Vol. 1. Not only using Afro-Brazilian traditional rhythms and instruments, but many of these artists look beyond Brazil to the greater African diaspora. Songs using Brazilian popular rhythms such as samba, forro, and carimbó are fused with digital styles formed in the ghettos of Jamaica and the United States. In this they aim to reframe the sometimes-conflict-ridden Brazilian identity politics, to represent as participants in, and in solidarity with the global African diaspora.

This mix covers not only tracks from the compilation, but new remixes, mashups and extended family.

Maga Bo - Kafundó Mixtape 2014

Esmeraldo Marques, Known as ChicoCorrea, is a pioneer of fusion of Northeast music and electronic music. Represents a new generation of Brazilian Bass music producers, focusing his artistic creativity between the oral traditions of his land and the low end frequencies of the sound systems.

Blending TR 808, analog synthesizers, with Cocos de Roda and Emboladas, his sets are a mix of his own productions and a mashup with samples he may find some hours before the gig. Always improvising and reconstructing the set each gig, in a live electronics format.

In Brazil, he produces his own parties: Baile Muderno (with live musicians) and FFG (with Dj Dolores, FurmigaDub and Maga Bo).

Has worked with Baiana System, Cabruera, Totonho and with his own band ChicoCorrea&ElectronicBand, performing in world music, Jazz, Alternative and electronic festivals in Europe, Senegal (Saint Louis Jazz Festival), China (Shanghai World Music Festival) and through Brazil.

Developed partnership in other projects with ChicoCesar, Dj Tudo, Dj Dolores, Maga Bo, Russo Passapusso, Furmiga Dub, David Bovée(BE), Les Sages Po(FR), Moe Clark(CA), Papet J(FR), Agua na Boca(FR), Makoto Kubota(JP).
