Composition for string quartet modelled on the contours, densities and sectional proportions of Missa “De Plus en Plus” by Johannes Ockeghem (c.1420-1497). Each segment of the piece comes as if from a different world, carrying headings from ‘holy’ and ‘good’ to ‘absurd’ and ‘socially disreputable yet intriguing’. As the piece wears on, the sections get shorter and shifts in mood become more playful.

Back in March 2020, a visit to Llangrannog in West Wales triggered this poem which I musicked a few weeks later as a virtual vocal ensemble with a smidgin of electronic meddling. 

The glistening strata inside the cave looked nice enough to eat.

Squeeze inside her [darkness]

Among the blackened, black and hilariously tortured slab:
a core, a quern to grind out light –
iridot spackled, 
glossed with earth-juices in a glister 
over candy-curved laydown layerdown saltlicks.

Here is all the trove: 

Jet – for the North and the curdled dark
Amber: in memory of the dawn
Flint for the Southern fire
And in the West, the Hydrophane.

(A kist of kindness against that tide)

Sush – ah. 
Shingle-drawn; seeking, shrinking, 
calling up from under shuddering sea.

Center no Distractor, the latest project of the collaborative duo Stephanie Pan and Stelios Manousakis, is an explosion of movement, physicality and gritty, thumping beats, for taiko and live electronics. Performances are simultaneously a concert, an exploration of sound and body, a visual spectacle; it is dance for the ears, the body, the eyes and the mind.
