MindTrip Podcast 070 - The Lady Machine

Camila Milieme has been playing techno long enough to experience a few of its boom-and-bust cycles. Starting off in Brazil in the late '90s with the kind of rippling, tooly techno you'd expect from that era, Milieme lost interest once things started going minimal and took a break from techno to take up studying instead. By the time she checked back in, the genre had taken a turn closer to the stuff she used to play, so she packed up her bags and moved to Berlin, where she's become an indispensable part of the techno scene. 

As The Lady Machine, Milieme has released on Mote-Evolver and also runs her own label, Unterwegs, with UK producer Decka. As you'll hear on her RA Podcast, she prefers a classicist (yet, still, modern) style of techno that mixes toughness with texture and detail. With plenty of unreleased tracks from her cohort and tracks from British Murder Boys, Jeff Mills, Dave Clark and Christian Wunsch, this is a timeless techno mix for heads from any generation, from the '90s to the '20s.

Kammy is a major reference among Brazilian techno DJs and remains one of the few DJs that has gained a reputation solely due to skills and music selection on the decks without achieving a career as a producer. She has been at the forefront of the underground electronic scene in Brazil for many years, and her skills have taken her around the globe over the past decade, including tours of Asia, Latin America, and numerous tours of Europe with club and festival performances across the continent. 

Kammy stands by deep musical research and precise technique, her remarkably versatile sets, blend genres from techno in its many forms and variations to electro, acid and full industrial EBM, and when combined with her fast, furious, but tight mixing create a perfect atmosphere with the dancefloor. "I never limit myself to one style. A quality sound, with attitude, and always dance floor orientated are what I try to convey in my sets", explains 
Kammy. 

Kammy relocated to Europe in 2010, where she has been focusing more time in learning the skills to make the tracks she has spent so long playing. Now in the UK, Kammy continues to hone her production skills, working with hardware, and concentrating on the quality, not quantity of output.

The Lady Machine is back for another round of Podcast fun for Bassiani Podcast 266. Born in Rio, based in Berlin, Camila Milieme developed an ear for techno at a young age, attending Brazil’s Galaktika parties and picking up tracks from radio show Novas Tendencias before landing her first gig at the fresh age of 21, and at the famed Bunker 94 in São Paulo no less. Following studies in music production in the UK, she eventually landed in Berlin and channeled everything into a dual career as DJ/producer. Her vinyl sets were, are, contagious and brimming with rapid-fire basslines, relying heavily on the type of techno à la Detroit that has been so foundational to the genre without aging a day. These ones she’s published on Mote Evolver, half of Unterwegs with musicmate Decka and resident at free-spirited Berlin party series Pornceptual. A successful crowd-DJ alliance is no easy task, but twenty years of experience have sharpened her instinct for sound and the people she’s playing it to. Driving techno that lurches along on a razor edge, slamming rhythms that vibrate through the body, the magical and unquantifiable substance that allows the very best raves to coalesce. Whatever it is she has it in spades and this latest instalment proves it. This recent number’s a cut from her live set at Bassiani in mid April; rampant grooves and low-end layers picked, welded together and distorted by this singular Brazilian talent, and mastered by @neptunemastering. The Lady Machine’s chopped-up beats are a techno purist’s dream, this newest arrival makes it reality.

Following a hiatus from the techno scene, over the past two years
she has cemented her name in the Berlin community playing at the
best events in the city and becoming a resident at the highly-rated
event Pornceptual.
Previously, she has been at the forefront of the underground
electronic scene in Brazil for many years, and her skills have taken
her around the globe over the past two decades, including Asia,
North America, Latin America, and numerous tours of Europe with
club and festival performances across the continent.
Now residing in Berlin, she has launched her on label Unterwegs
and is releasing the second record on her label with some long-
awaited production in the form of two solid, raw techno tracks:
Diligence & Vigilance. Her tracks have been supported and played
by Ben Sims, Dave Clarke, Kr!z, Noncompliant, just to name a few.
Meanwhile, she is continuously working on her own productions
and playing gigs for well established clubs and parties.
