‘Limb by Limb’ by Pembrokeshire-based duo Name’s is the follow up single to ‘Backs Turned’, a song that has already been included in BBC Introducing Wales list of songs of 2017. It was also described by ‘From the Margins’ as a “wintry soundscape with all the fluency, space and atmosphere of Mogwai’s Les Revenants soundtrack”. 
Where do you go after creating such an assured artistic statement with your debut single? ‘Limb by Limb’ is the answer. Names have shed any creative ego to create a raw, emotionally rich song devoid of self-indulgence and over reaching dramatization. Yet again Ioan and Joey have found beauty within the smouldering ashes left in the wake of life’s broken relationships. As Ioan explains, ‘Limb by Limb’ is “largely inspired by the ignorance of issues within a relationship which slowly bring about its demise. Also the effect of a background anxiety on life and ability to socialise.” 

‘Limb by Limb’ musically and lyrically perfectly depict the contrasting moments of clarity and internal isolation one feels holding on to a dying relationship. The sense of calm in the release, yet claustrophobic panic of the unknown. As with Talk Talk’s majestic ‘Spirit of Eden’, Names are quickly becoming masters of the intimate, unseen but deeply felt moments we share. Their music explodes on to a cinematic canvas full of flowing chords and echoey melodies.

Despite her last name, Anna St. Louis was born and raised in Kansas City. She grew up a painter and singing in punk bands, eventually leaving her hometown to attend art school in Philadelphia. After graduating she made the move to Los Angeles where she began teaching herself guitar, writing songs and recording them on her own in her bedroom. First Songs is the sound of someone discovering their talent in real time - a peak into the collage of a wonderful mind that is absorbing their new surroundings and using new tools to put them into the room. Listening to this collection you can feel the sun coming in through the window - Anna on the foot of the bed with a guitar on her knee, finding her voice. St. Louis wears her influences well - think Patsy Cline singing over John Fahey - but has a style all her own. And while you can take the artist out of the midwest, you can't take the midwest out of the artist - so let this be known; this is Midwestern music ran through a California filter. I believe Anna will have many more releases in her lifetime, but let it all begin here - First Songs.

ANNA ST. LOUIS - Fire (Mare Records)

The Portland-based indie folk group Shook Twins has released their track “Safe” via Earmilk. The track appears on their forthcoming EP, 2, out November 03, 2017. 

“I've been feeling a lot of unsafe love in my life lately. It's just hard to fully trust anything right now,” says Laurie Shook. “So I really resonated with the first line "all I want is a love that feels safe" when Katelyn started singing it from the living room in a cabin by a river. I was making breakfast and I stopped and sat down and continued the song because I knew it was going somewhere. It goes on to reach the ones out there that are having a hard time letting go of a love that they had dreamed up in their head. Sometimes, you just have to let go of the dream, and be open to a new one.”

The EP finds the group strip down from a full band to inherent power of the group’s namesake duo—identical twin sisters Katelyn Shook [vocals, guitar] and Laurie Shook [banjo, vocals]. In early 2017, they holed up alone in a room with just two voices and two instruments and cut the seven-song collection live to tape, serving up bare bones renditions of fan favorites, covers, and one new tune. 

“Musically, it differs from our other studio albums, because it’s just two twins in a room performing on two instruments,” explains Katelyn. “It’s much more raw emotionally and almost vulnerable. It’s nice to hear our growth as a duo and notice our individual grooves. It showcases these songs in a different way than they had been or will be recorded. It’s just a taste of the simplest core of our band: The Shook Twins.”

The group emerged in 2008 with their independent debut You Can Have The Rest followed by Window and 2014’s What We Do—which garnered acclaim from USA Today and more. Organically stirring up a buzz, they engendered fandom in fellow creators such as Langhorne Slim, The Lumineers, Mason Jennings, and iconic best-selling author Neil Gaiman who claimed, “They make music that twines through your soul the way vines cover an abandoned shack in the woods.” Along the way, the full band, including Niko Slice [electric guitar, mandolin, vocals], Barra Brown [drums, vocals, drum pad], and Josh Simon [bass, vocals, electric guitar, synth], has shared bills with everyone from Ryan Adams to The Indigo Girls.

Shook Twins are currently on tour to support their forthcoming EP and ready their next body of work.

"I’ve been a Flight Facilities fan for a long while, and was lucky enough to see them last year while at Austin City Limits. There’s something really special about their music that transports you to another time and place. When I listen to their music I always get the feeling I’m on holiday in Italy or Switzerland, driving through the alps in a classic car past pristine lakes and world class vistas. So it’s only natural that I’d want to cover one of their songs to try be a part of that. This track really speaks too me, the longing and unrequited love (well that’s how I read it) are topics that I feel are sort of my speciality! It reminds me of a great track by sixties group The Honeys ‘The One You Can’t Have (is the one that you want the most)’, that feeling of not being able to make it work with the person you really want to. I approached Alistair from Boycrush to work on the track with me and really happy with what we’ve come up with together! I love the almost MJ style baseline. I think it really suits this version.
