Another song for a personal project called Mountain Story. The first few notes of this song had been sitting around on my hard drive for a while, so I decided recently to open it back up and give it another shot. Personally, I'm very proud of how well this came out. It's not quite up to Cave Story standards, but it's pretty close.

Haze Desert is a bitter, foreboding location in Mountain Story, and the first that you encounter. The entire area is filled with rogue robots which you'll have to smash to pieces to cross.

My second ever song in Famitracker! I wanted to challenge myself with my second song by remixing a particularly technical tune from Pokemon Battle Revolution. I'm pretty happy with how the effects on this came out.

The first song I composed for my Mother 25th Anniversary project. I had to reupload this because I wasn't happy at all with the instruments in the older version. The new ones are much more balanced and sound closer to real instruments.

My first original tune completed in Famitracker. I had a lot of previous experience composing, but this was the first time I went for composing an 8-bit melody myself. This song was a slow, melodic tune made for a fictional Spelunky clone.

I've always loved the music of Maurice Ravel. He always composed such powerful tunes, with Bolero being no exception. And did you know that Koji Kondo once considered using this song as the theme for the Zelda series? Just imagine!

A bit cliche, I know, but I couldn't resist remixing this tune for my Mother 25th Anniversary Project. And this is the Mother version, not the Earthbound version! There wasn't a lot I could do here except add in a guitar part and lower the baseline an octave or two. Nevertheless, I was surprised at how much room for improvement there was.

It's odd how the fourth song I composed for my Mother 25th Anniversary Project was actually the first song that played in the game. Really, there wasn't a lot I could do here beyond changing a few instruments and adding a few effects. But that's OK, because the song's simplicity is what made it so memorable.

Well, I feel like I'm getting closer to professionalism here.
New approaches I've taken in the creation of this cover include switching to j0CC-FamiTracker, setting tempo with a Groove implementation instead of using the "Tempo" setting like I had done previously and creating arpeggio schemes specifically with the Groove and 16.7 ms ticks in mind, and utilizing the Zxx command on the DPCM channel to achieve a popping noise to accentuate my "bass drum" instrument and simultaneously gain some control over the Triangle channel's volume.

Thanks to the FamiTracker.org Discord and 14ml/bruhbruhbruh for making me aware of the Zxx effect in particular, but also for many other users who got me where I am so quickly.  : )

So yeah... this cover. I probably bit off more than a rookie should be chewing (again), but I guess I'll let you be the judge of that.

Some interesting decisions I ended up making here are that the presence of the beat and bass drum were so crucial to the character in most sections of this piece that I basically even have the Triangle and Pulse channels slamming quick downward portamentos at low pitches on every beat to give more of a bass presence (but not always Pulse 1 if it would noticeably interrupt the melody).

I also rewrote a lot of bass and "tenor" parts because some things that sounded fine with the heavy sax and synths just didn't translate too well to the chip, and I was also transcribing and found it very difficult to hear exactly what was going on in some of the really low pitches.

There is also a section where Pulse 1 AND 2 are using arps... tell me how you feel about that one lol.

The whole piece ended up feeling a lot more driving and rock-like than the original, but I guess that's just a consequence of the difficulty of letting echoes fill the void when you're working with just 4 channels of audio, the nature of a typical rookie making Noise channel percussion like cymbals, and me having to truncate and "squish" elements of the music in to 4 channels by combining passages and filling chords and instruments with arps--all of which sound "busier" the more I compound.

Some of the more attentive of you may have noticed there is a lot of popping in the audio whenever there's a swanky pitch bend--especially in the 8 measures without percussion before the loop. This is due to a hardware quirk in the NES that's pretty difficult to work around when you're working in D-minor/F-Major keys or chords. I could basically put the tune in a totally different key and rewrite parts, or get rid of the pitch bends. In the end, I decided they were better left in.

Anyway, my most ambitious arrangement yet! I hope you enjoy.  : )

Slap City: Bumper Town (2A03 NES Cover)

I finally uploaded something for this month! Like a lot of people, I've been really hook on playing the newest Animal Crossing (and also suffering staying indoors more than I'd like), so I think it'd be nice to do a cover of the main theme, especially since no one's done it yet. I'm really thankful that Famitracker has bongos in their DPCM files that I can use, since that seemed to be a huge part of the percussion here. I'm starting to also realize that a good deal of guitars are gonna need you to use the note delay effect, which is kind of challenging. Still, this song is as much fun as the game, and it was pretty fun to cover it. I might do more stuff from this game in the future.
The Animal Crossing: New Horizons Official Soundtrack is composed by Yasuki Iwata,Yumi Takahashi, Shinobu Nagata, Sayaka Doto, and Masato Ohashi. I couldn't fit all of this in the title. Sorry!
