Steinway artist, Chad Lawson, decided Chopin needed a new introduction.  Along with violinist Judy Kang (Lady Gaga, Ryuichi Sakamoto) and cellist Rubin Kodheli (Kanye West, Norah Jones), Lawson has arranged ten Chopin works into a minimalist landscape.

It's a risk editing the "poet of the piano" but one that Chopin would be proud of.  

Taking 10 Chopin works, Lawson decided to scale the works down to a minimalist setting.  "I knew even if bare-bones, Chopin's works could still be as spellbinding as the original compositions we are so familiar with." says the pianist.

Just A Thought

This is the first movement of a large orchestral suite I am working on based on the major monuments and memorials at the National Mall in Washington DC. I hope to complete it in 2017. This movement is designed as an introductory section which will be brought back and varied a number of times in the suite to represent some of the walking from one monument to the next, similar to the use of the Promenade in Moussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition". 

This short movement depicts the Mall at dawn as the morning's first light appears in the reflecting pool. Slowly, the mall becomes the center of more and more activity as first one walker / jogger appear and as they are joined by others as pedestrian traffic from all walks of life increases. This continues until the tour busses start arriving and their passenger groups begin their orderly march from one monument to the next.

The main thematic element of this movement is the falling 2nd, which makes up the opening chords (D-C)as well as most of the main melody.

Finding Inner Balance

The Chopin Fantaisie-Impromptu is one of those iconic pieces of the classical piano repertoire. It is arguably played too much so why have I added my performance? I think the infinite ways a piece can change in the hands of different musicians is actually very interesting. My version is fast but lyrical and I search for an unexaggerated and natural romanticism and warmth.
