Chicago legend, deepest of diggers, editor, producer, collector, Mark Grusane!

Mark Grusane is a Chicago treasure whose relationship with the dancefloor goes back to the 80s. With a special instinct for what makes people move, his unique approach to DJing brings together obscure genres of dance music with passion, style and panache.
Music has always been an integral part of Mark Grusane’s life, from his Chicago childhood in the early ‘80s to his globe-trotting career as a DJ and producer. His passionate, intuitive style coupled with an encyclopedic knowledge of all things house and disco has made him a favorite among dancers and DJs alike.

Mark’s selections always come from the heart, mixing technical prowess with perfectly timed groovy selections that are not just obscure but also filled with emotion. His unique style and command over the dancefloor comes from a lifetime of digging, listening and making music. Growing up surrounded by numerous individuals involved in Chicago DJ, music and club culture played a crucial role in his upbringing, shaping him into the person he is today. Mark started collecting music with his older brother as a pre-teen, his early taste also shaped by the sound of local radio WBMX. In high school he was already DJing on college radio WKKC and spending his lunch breaks making music with friends.
 
With his record collection exponentially growing and his thirst for music nowhere near quenched, he began to sell some to his peer and older DJs. This passion led to creation of Mr. Peabody Records with fellow music fanatic Mike Cole in 2004, which soon became a go-to source for local and international diggers alike.

Sadly the brick-and-mortar store closed its doors in 2012, but Mark continued to bring his incessant curiosity and love for music into the world through compilations and edits series. He now runs the Disctechno Music, which aims to showcase his diverse passion for dance music from friends and affiliates, as well as his own original productions.

Mark has played many revered clubs and festivals, such as Dekmantel, Panoramabar, Bassiani, Djoon and Nowadays. 

Be it through his mixes, DJ sets, edits or productions, Mark always knows how to create a cohesive, highly emotional narrative you’re bound to want to revisit over and over again. Tour dates for 2021 are pending, Stay Tuned.

Julien is a Lyon based DJ, producer and co runs the SOL Discos reissue label along side Pascal Rioux (a la @favoriterec) 

I’ve been in touch with Julien for a while now and stoked that he agreed to do a mix for us. His Serendipity show on @lemellotron and Red Stripe Disco mixes have been a big source of inspiration for me over the years!

Waxist has turned out some killer disco edits on labels including Kalakuta Soul, @rainandshinerecords @culturesofsoul & @isleofjurarecords He’s also a dab hand at A&R and been involved in official reissues of some of the rarest disco records out there. His own label SOL Discos has put out 3x 45s and 2x LP comps, so go check those out.

"Back in May of 2016, a message from my good friend Mark de Clive-Lowe showed up in my inbox. It was an email introduction connecting Eric Crandell (the founder of 101 Apparel) with me for a possible collaboration project. Over the years, 101 Apparel had collaborated with a list of acclaimed DJs, artists and music producers for their limited-edition "101 Apparel Artist Series", so I was quite honored when they reached out to me as well.

 At the time, Mark and I were riding the wave from my Sound Signature release, "Moon Circuitry", a raw uptempo dance-oriented song which features his brilliant keyboard playing in combination with some soulfully-unapologetic "slap you in your mouth" music I produced. The record broke boundaries, won awards and opened eyes in ways I didn't anticipate, majorly catapulting me back into the music production scene after my 5 year hiatus away from releasing records. And things have been growing stronger and stronger ever since...something I'm beyond grateful for. So when the 101 Apparel opportunity presented itself, I knew immediately that it would be important to connect the dots back to my history...helping my new audience I've acquired in the current underground dance chapter of my career, to also have a taste of my roots in underground hip-hop, etc.

For the exclusive promo 7-inch, I wanted to revisit a song favorite I produced and recorded with Mos Def, and on the flip, include a previously unreleased song I produced and recorded with Yukimi Nagano (prior to the formation of the band Little Dragon she's now become famous with).

Constantly touring and DJing internationally this entire time, it's taken longer for everything to finalize for this project, but I knew once all was completed, it would be special. Plus being that 2018 marks the 25th anniversary since my music was first released on vinyl, I felt this was also the perfect way to remind or enlighten folks that I didn't just pop onto the music scene in 2015. Despite my youthful appearance, I've been at this for quite a long time. It's remained important for me to not only continue to challenge myself in new ways, but to maintain the balance of staying true to the principles that my legacy was first founded on...the things that I've learned from the greats that came before me. 

Collecting records since the age of 5 means that diggin' for music has literally been threaded into the fabric of my lifestyle the last 4 decades. It's been a lifelong journey of discovery, education and pure joy that keeps me growing, learning and sharing. So I definitely wanted my DJ mix to reflect this. My goal was to cohesively weave a slow-building story using numerous vinyl gems from various soulful genres I've collected over the years...records that would eventually inspire the listener to get up out of their seat and dance, evoking the kind of inner happiness that only music from the soul can fill us with. Whether we're familiar with the music or not, or what year it was recorded and released...good music that moves us remains timeless in my opinion.
