Selador boss man (job share) Steve Parry is turning 50. Hard to believe when you look at the man's effervescence and energy as he juggles Selador with regular high level gigs, his bespoke promo company SMP3, and of course his blossoming studio exploits.

A true solider of the scene, Steve has dedicated his adult life to club culture, and his abiding passion of discovering and sharing new music, be it from behind the counter at the legendary 3 Beat record store, behind the decks playing at the equally legendary Cream, and as both promoter and resident DJ at cult 00s night Alderaan (all in his home town of Liverpool).

He has long sourced tunes for some of the very biggest DJs (initially via vinyl packages sent from 3 Beat, but quickly adapting to a digital service), and SMP3 has worked with many key labels including Sudbeat, Bedrock, Lost and Found, Frau Blau and Renaissance. Steve's knowledge and enthusiasm remain undimmed.

The advent of Selador has also given Steve a natural home for his finely crafted productions (bar a couple of exceptions which John Digweed nabbed for Bedrock) - and to celebrate this big birthday milestone, we've invited three of Steve's favourite producers to remix three of his previous Seladorian gems.

303V remixed by Doc Martin

Talking of soldiers of the scene, Doc Martin, the much-loved globetrotting, genre straddling DJ, takes Steve's paean to the Liverpool club night, maintains the original's addictive squelchiness, while going for a hypnotically funky workout.

What You Make It remixed by Renato Cohen

Selador favourite Renato Cohen from Brazil keeps the peak time spirit of last year's What You Make It very much intact but adds his own inimitable twist to proceedings. Bass face!

Fenner remixed by Bebetta

Completing our titanic trio, Berlin's creative powerhouse Bebetta takes Steve's evergreen Fenner and wraps its inescapable vocal hook in a dreamy techno blanket. Gorgeous.

As UK based Independent Electronic Dance label Selador Recordings approach their 9th anniversary, neatly coinciding with their 150th release, label bosses Dave Seaman & Steve Parry celebrate by unveiling an exciting new collaborative project under the alias, Nunchi Coup.

“We wanted to try to capture our 30+ year journey through Acid House Culture with some new work that reflected our history but still had it’s finger firmly on the pulse of the here and now” explains Dave “Steve and I are both Acid House Lifers but continue to be just as excited by new music as we were back in those early halcyon days. Running the label together has only served to reinforce that.”

“The vibe is a little more raw than what we’d usually do” Steve continues, “We were aiming for Nunchi Coup to have a more classic House and Techno sound. A nod to our heritage but still in a contemporary setting. After three decades in the business we’re even more aware of the circular nature of things.”

The two tracks on offer, whilst quite different in style, definitely have a unifying bond in that they both sound like they could have been made any time in the last 30 years. The astutely named, sample-laced ’Slaves To The Algo-Rhythm’ draws on the classic combination of emotional, soaring, orchestral strings set atop slamming House beats. Goosebumps-a-go-go! Whilst it’s bed partner, the visceral jackhammer that is ‘Coping Mechanism’ packs a punch like Tyson Fury with it’s Rave stabs and strong Warehouse party DNA. In Yer Face!

And the name, Nunchi Coup? What’s that all about then?

Nunchi is the Korean word for the ability to gauge how people are thinking and feeling in order to create connection, trust and harmony. Like a sixth sense, a kind of emotional intelligence and awareness of your surroundings.

“The concept spoke to us as DJs, that subtle art of reading the room and acting appropriately has been the mainstay of our musical philosophy since forever. The Koreans believe Nunchi is the secret to happiness and we can’t argue with that”.

Steve Parry Presents 'Original Sinner - Mirror Ball Sleaze Vol 2'

This is my set from Manchester cathedral 12th Aug 2022, playing before Sasha. it was such an amazing venue to play in, a spectacular building, and a hot sunny day, with light shining through the stained glass windows.

There were so many friends and friendly faces in the crowd, and it filled up really early (my set was 5-8pm), and people seemed in such an amazing mood, it was a real pleasure to play at this gig.

I hope you like my set - I loved playing these tracks - old and new.

25+ years dj experience, still loving dj-ing like he's just started. Frisky Radio monthly show, runs Selador Recordings (with Dave Seaman), Is the head honcho at SMP3 Music Promo and SMP3 Music Management.
There are DJs that are instantly recognisable because of their standing in the scene, their visibility on social media or the wacky things they do, and then there are equally talented, immensely passionate people who prefer to work off the radar, people like Steve Parry. 

A working DJ since the age of 15, Steve has amassed a wealth of musical knowledge and honed some serious DJ skills over his time working as manager of the world famous 3 Beat records, a 3 year residency at Cream in Liverpool  and a host of headlining gigs across the globe. As a radio host, his Red Zone show ran for 10 years on Juice FM featuring the hottest new music and regular world class DJ guests. His new show on Frisky radio continues in that vein delivering the best new music around. 

As a promoter Steve has had much success. Firstly with his legendary ‘Alderaan’ nights which ran from '97 - 2001 in a room above the infamous Lemon Lounge helped to shape the very scene Liverpool has become known for. Steves attention to detail and crowd focused guest selections has built a solid and lasting reputation in his hometown and far beyond. His new project - Luna is shaping up to be just as influential and acts as a welcome antithesis to a scene in the stranglehold of corporate greed. 

These days Steve is mostly found working on his company - SMP3 Music Management. where he sources music for a diverse range of DJs including Sasha, Just Be, Sander Klienenberg and many others. SMP3 also has a promo mail out service which regularly features tracks from labels as far ranging as Bedrock, Sudbeat, mircoCastle and Sprout. Steve has also turned his hand to acting as an A&R Consultant to a number of high profile labels alongside working on his own record label with Dave Seaman called Selador. A lifelong ambition having been involved with music for so long, the labels primary aim is to showcase the musical diversity of both Steve and Dave, and its success so far is mainly down to their passion and utter devotion to quality over quantity. 

Production is also on Steves mind these days with several remixes out during 2014 and a new EP and further remixes due in 2015. 

A music fan at heart, he is most happy immersed in his number one passion.

Selador continues to strain every sinew to play their part. This year, Selador have toasted ten rotations round the sun at parties in London, Berlin, Denver and Amsterdam… The label have birthed magnificent merch, special editions of ye old magic black plastic and musical firecrackers a-plenty…and of course atop the whole b’day cake, has been their Decade series, which throughout the last few months has commemorated this significant milestone.

A fitting finale to bring down the curtain on Selador's Decade Escapade, this UK-France-Portugal tag team sees boss man Steve Parry in tandem with label debutants Mario ‘n’ Mustache concocting a rare beauty. Lose yourself as its soul stirring keys and instantly memorable motifs ride serenely over an acidic soundscape.

This was my set from the wonderful Skyline in Glasgow, at Radisson Red in February. I was the first of the Selador artists to play, and this was an early afternoon set, so i kept the vibe warm and housey.

Last Monday, i was very happy to be one of the Secret DJs playing in Freddie's at Pikes, Ibiza.

As I was on first, i wanted to play music associated with that legendary venue, and so i brought some of my favourite smiley vibes to the dance floor. From classic gems to unreleased future biggies, I delve deep, and donned my musical alias 'The Original Sinner', where i explore the funkier side of my musical mind, so prepare to expect some mirror ball sleaze.

It is, of course, no surprise that there Selador catalogue is peppered with stellar contributions from Da Boss (job share) Steve Parry. Indeed, many of them are undoubtedly among our finest moments – tracks like ‘Fenner’, ‘303V’ and ‘Squidfist’ are both close to our hearts and the signal for serious dancefloor carnage whenever dropped.

Over the last couple of years, Steve has focused on some choice collabs – among them his ‘Marmalade Skies’ hook up with Renato Cohen, one of the label’s biggest tunes in The Year of Big Tunes that was our 10th birthday; while the Nunchi Coup team up with partner Dave Seaman produced a trio of big hitters that racked up the streams.

However, Steve’s last solo outing was (checks notes…) – 2020?! Parry, you lazy &*£*&$!!! Anyway, “we’ll deal with that internally”. The good news is that while the follow-up to that year’s mighty double header of ‘Roll the Dice’ and ‘What You Make It’ may fall into the “long awaited” bracket, it certainly fits the “worth the wait” bill. In true Ste Pazza style, it morphs genres for fun – it’s deep but squelchily acidic, heads down progmungous but with the catchiest of ‘light touch’ vocal hooks, all riding atop a techno train.

Meanwhile, we’re delighted to usher another label debutant through the door marked ‘so delighted to have you on board’ – yes sireee, Dachshund is in the building. What’s more, he delivers a remix which does what too many re-rubs don’t do – it acknowledges and utilises key elements from the original version. However, it does so while effortlessly blending in a plethora of fresh riffage, from the melodic to the klangtastic. Bullseye.

From Burning Man to Panorama Bar, Panthera Krause knows how to energise and elevate the most demanding, knowledgeable dancefloors. He is, of course, equally adept in the studio, be it as part of Marbert Rocel, who enjoyed a long and fruitful partnership with the mighty Compost label; or now focusing on solo projects and his esteemed Riotvan label, all from his base in one of Germany’s most vibrant cities, Leipzig.

All of which, natch, means we are beyond delighted to have him debut on Selador. The beneficiary of Panthera’s craft is none other than our very own Steve Parry. With new tune ‘Turn Up the Juice’ already hailed as an “anthem” by Hot Since 82, the juice gets turned up a few notches more with this bodyslammer of a remix.

Our man Panthera remains true to the spirit of Steve’s original but goes darker with a late 90s / early 00s vibe with whip cracker percussion, dirty synths, and the opulent vocal hook all aiding and abetting this unabashed act of grand dancefloor larceny.

On Monday 13th October, i was Pikes Secret DJ (with Dave Seaman) playing the legendary Freddie's club - a truly magical venue with an amazing crowd. I was playing first, and literally as soon as the doors opened at 11.30pm, the club was instantly full. Be able to play such a room, allows me to explore my housey side, and start off disco slanted, but with plenty of groove, and building up as the night continues to get hazy and even more magical.

Steve Parry's (almost my birthday) Live Stream 11-09-20

Steve Parry is unquestionably at the top of the UK scene, regularly playing along side heavy weights such as John Digweed, Sasha, Dave Seamen, Nick Warren, Hernan Cattaneo and Guy J, he is the DJ’s choice of DJ.

Widely respected across the industry, his acclaimed 3 year residency at the iconic Cream in Liverpool, seen him rise to the top, regularly being booked to headline around the world, playing in clubs such as Ministry of Sound and the legendary Space Ibiza.

His ties to his home city of Liverpool are strong, where he managed the world famous 3Beat Records, and as a promoter, Steve had much success, firstly with his legendary ‘Alderaan’ nights which ran from ’97 – 2001 in a room above the infamous Lemon Lounge and helped to shape the very scene Liverpool has become known for to this day.

Now in between touring the world, Steve and long term friend and business partner Dave Seamen head up the Selador label, with many chart toppers under their belt already and many more to come.
