The label is delighted to welcome Kris Baha with his first 12" for Especial. After killer remixes of Sfire and Red Axes for the label, his name as an artist, with his darker take on dance music, has risen and risen.

With releases on Bahnsteig 23, CockTail d'Amore and Pinkman, Baha has become a respected artist in just a few years. Building analogue equipped studios in Melbourne and Berlin, DJing, producing and mixing have all led to atonal ear, where success came through dedication.

Following his debut album Palais, Barely Alive acts as release from these years of sweat. A call to all in this modern world, the song exemplifies a move from club music to a freedom in sound and song, as vox crash against 808 and Arp 2600. Remixes start with Timothy J Fairplay a name synonymous with Especial. Here TJF laces his trademark echoplexxed wash for a cold wave mover. Next prodigy Job Sifre builds on his acclaimed debuts with a remodel that goes straight to 'that' basement, mixing his love of electro, new wave and industrial. To close, the legend of Das Ding creates a re-alternate remix, fusing his unique fuzz with Baha's ode for a brittle finale.

"Box Cutter" is a multi-genre electronic album featuring eleven tracks including "Scroll Click" and "Sick". Eight of the tracks are instrumental. It sounds nothing like anything I have released before. And I love it!

The title “Box Cutter” was suggested to me by my man as I expressed to him my desire to be free from the confines of genres, boxes, brand, image, and the idea of ‘likes’ and money determining what success is. “Box Cutter” was birthed from a need to reconnect with creation and to acknowledge the diverse taste and love of sound that swims within my mind and spirit. I created to reconnect with joy and play. I created to give myself purpose and something to put energy into each day. I created for the sake of creating alone. I do not intend on staying in one lane with one look nor one feel. For me, it’s about creation. It’s about the music. It’s about connection. It’s about the constantly changing self. It’s organic. It’s real. It’s freedom. It’s love.

I created and completed “Box Cutter” in May 2020 in 20 days during a time of great pain, sadness, and confusion. This album poured out of me during the time of the Covid-19 pandemic, Protests, Inequality, Needless killing, brutal Discrimination, a country Falling apart, looming Dictatorship, attempts to prevent Free speech and Peaceful Congregation, vast wealth Inequality, a Failing healthcare system, and an attack on journalism, art, and education.

For two months, from March to May 2020, I fell into depression, that fully physical and mental combination which drags you down into total darkness. A feeling of worthlessness and loneliness was unshakable. A feeling that my dreams and visions for the next couple of years may be forever stomped out. A feeling that my greatest joy is longly paused with no end in sight. A feeling of a lack of community and connection. I had lost all of my work and all forms of income. I watched an immoral, selfish, compassionless narcissist continue to bring my country to ruin. I watched thousands of people die at the hand of a disease that should have been dealt with quicker and better. I watched friends being attacked, shot, and arrested while peacefully protesting against deeply unjust, unhealthy, racist systems.

After two months of depression, a voice inside reminded me to play, to create, to be weird and expressive during this time. With studios being closed and not owning any professional engineering equipment of my own to be able to properly capture organic instruments, I jumped back into the saddle of producing electronic music for the first time in six years. I created to release feelings of sadness, anger, and frustration. I created to reconnect with joy and play. I created to give myself purpose and something to put energy into each day. I created for the sake of creating alone, not for money, not for attention, not to be able to perform the music live. I created for myself. After some time I realized how important it was for me to share this music with everyone during this dark period of time in history. This is for anyone who hears it. This is for all of us. Feel your feelings and dance!

"Sick" is the first track I made on "Box Cutter". It's an Underground Electro House track inspired by all the selfish, delusional, hateful people in this world that make me sick!
