INTERVIEW

What do you do to get into a creative state?
"Sometimes the machines just inspire me, sometimes I open a bottle of wine."

Where do you draw your inspiration from?
"Situations that I’m finding myself in in, the feelings I have, technology around me."

What do you love most about being an artist?
"Touching peoples hearts man. Seeing happy faces at gigs or getting messages of people that are moved by my music gives me a lot of strength."

How do you stay focussed in a world of constant distraction?
"Just turn off notifications & zero in on the machines. I have a lot of trouble focussing, so eliminating distractions helps me a lot."

Do you have a morning routine?
"Hell no, I’m not a morning person!"

What fascinates you about your art from?
"One guy sitting in his basement can do it all, create an atmosphere & make people move and feel – the ability to convey emotion through a technological intermediary."

What, for you, is the purpose of art?
"Expressing yourself through a medium & let other people feel by coming in contact with your work. Art does not necessarily has to have a function, in contrast to design – a lot of dance music (including mine) is more design than art."

What is sacred to you?
"Staying true to myself, integrity is key. I like the Egyptian afterlife concept of having your heart weighed against a feather."

What is your opinion on success?
"Success is when you look back on the path you treaded & get a warm, fuzzy feeling."

What is your opinion on failure?
"Failure is such a loaded term. The absence of success is not failure & failing a goal you set for yourself is not actually a bad thing. Every „failure“ is something you can learn from and improve."

What would your 16 year old you think about what you’re doing today?
"Since my 16 year old self was already dabbling with Ableton he would be like 'Damn you have all that gear - make more music!'“

What makes you laugh?
"Dogs. Dogs are awesome."

In which ways could the scene improve in the future?
"Right now there’s too much focus on self-marketing via social media & less on creativity and skill. This is in part due to an over-saturation of the market which makes it hard to be the cream rising to the top. I hope that in the future we find a way to honor quality & dedication and focus less on shiny pictures & follower metrics. 
Women are still underrepresented in my scene (especially on the production side) and sexism is still a thing. Hopefully, we can be more welcoming & kind towards dedicated female newcomers and have a more diverse palette of creative output together. 
What also bothers me is the stagnation. E.g., once there is a successful sound, a bunch of copycats swoop in and the market is flooded with „same-ish“, uninspired works. How did we evolve from ten years ago? Right now a lot of the new stuff that is most visible sounds like boring, recycled 90s stuff. Electronic music & especially Techno was once a promise of uncharted sonic territory and possiblity, so why do we always go back to the same 909 Drums and Acid Lines?"

Who will considerably give direction to the scene soon?
"Right now, we’re at a turning point due to the COVID-19 quarantine. After the dust settles I really hope that the underground spirit returns and a lot of new & creative artists emerge and get a chance to be heard. This is an extinction-level event for the clubbing scene, but after a forest fire new life always springs. And I really hope that the younger generation of artists will rise to the occasion and bring a new sonic diversity to the scene."

Favorite release at the moment & of all times?
"At the moment I really dig the first Koelsch Album 1977. 
Favorite release of all times is a hard pick. With Teeth by Nine Inch Nails and Gui Boratto’s Chromophobia have a special place in my heart."

"My father and sister played several instruments and my mother had a Roland synthesizer. I was 7 years old. This is where it all started for me.
I tried to play the Roland and experimented by manipulating sounds and tunes. Trial and error teached me how to make inspiring sounds.

Sounds for me are a very interesting thing. Sounds, not only of music, but also from daily life stuff: footsteps in a parking lot, wind blowing or even a ticking clock.

Later I discovered Techno and eventually started playing. I was amazed by all the tracks that i could share with the crowd, sounds, effects, the vibe, the way people reacted to it, and most of all, what was happening inside of me!

I wanted to make this kind of music. I was mesmerized...

So i bought my first gear, it was a Roland MC909 and Logic audio. I started to experiment a bit and learned the tricks and trade by myself and through a music forum were I dropped my first try-outs I met Ramon Tapia.

He was my very first guide. He would invite me a few times in his studio at USA Import Antwerp and share with me a lot of inspiration and knowledge about music.

When it comes to music I get inspired by all kinds of events that occur in my life. I believe that my personal emotions are the basis for any musical creation. I might be a dreamer, but when I feel joy or anger, or when other emotions run high, I feel creativity tickle and that are the best moments to make a powerful track.

And sometimes, like a writers' block, there comes nothing at all. And that is also good."
