This is a recording of a suspension bridge via a Geofón (geophone). Geophones were originally designed to measure seismic movement so they are a lot of fun to experiment with for field recording. A magnet attached the microphone to one of the hollow metal pillars. The sound was then edited via Logic Pro

Suspension Bridge via Geofon

In a nondescript alleyway in South Dunedin, the Dunedin Gasworks Museum houses some of the world's best-preserved gasworks machinery. During my visit, I explored their machine room, where I found five examples of stationary steam engines. I decided to attach a LOM Geofón to one of these engines to capture the sounds it produced. The rhythmic sound I heard was created by the mechanical lubricators that apply oil to the piston. I recorded the sound using a Zoom F6 and edited it using Apple Logic.

Red-Billed Gulls around the Otago Yacht Club

During a recording trip to the Chatham Islands, I came across this hive near one of my recording sites. I carefully positioned my AT BP4025 stereo microphone as close as I felt safe to the hive. I recorded the sound with my Zoom F6 and edited it in Apple Logic. For an immersive experience that feels like bees buzzing around your head, be sure to listen with headphones!
