2016 saw the successful release of The Deep Sea And Its Rivals by Unfug scale the charts and following the overwhelming support for the Harpune remix competition, a full remix album felt the logical next step. Careful selection was made with each remixer to produce very special treatments of every track in order to create a stunning undersea take on the original album. Taking influence from a life growing up near and around the briny depths of Germany's Northern coast and now residing in the relative calm of Denmark’s capital city, Copenhagen, Unfug guides on a trip among the waves of sonic delight to visit the creatures that lurk below the crests and the mysteries unknown to humankind; unmarked on any atlas. 

“It all started with the title track. It is one of the few on the album featuring some sort of vocals.” says Unfug. So who better than Kompakt regular, Marten Sundberg to start things off with Atlas, which he takes into fairly jazzy and upbeat territory utilizing a catchy hook in the main break to capture our attention. A deeply hypnotic affair, Wolfgng’s take on Shipwreck keeps things fairly muted giving the auditory impression of sinking; its claustrophobic atmosphere really drives the track forward. 

After the hugely successful Bootleg Ben remix of Poseidon, label mate Max Jacobs had a lot to do. Devilishly deep and atmospheric, he does a magnificent job of translating Unfug’s original idea with nuanced touches throughout.  The remix of Pray For The Lost sees Pilofre back after a year away from the Gibbon family. He turns in a respectful and satisfying re-imagination of one of Unfug’s stand out originals. Moving on, the opening barely audible vocals and deliberate tribal percussion of Drew Miller’s remix of The Deep Sea And Its Rivals signals a change in tone on the album swapping the mangled guitars of the original for some skippy percussive synth hits and a rubbery bass line. 

“I always had a thing for concept albums and themed music. My favourite records are actually concept albums, stuff like Crack the Skye or Frances The Mute (if you’re familiar with Prog Rock/Metal). The other thing is that I always liked the sea. The calm yet unpredictable movement of silent waters.” - Unfug 

Harpune, according to Unfug, was the result of playing around with a new synth. The bass growl of which has not been overlooked by fellow Germans, Oemtilde and the Hamburg natives therefore construct a thoughtful, deep reworking that sticks very closely to Unfug’s original ideas. Next up is label boss Benwaa for his remix of Gotteslachs. 

No slouch in the studio, Benwaa ups the tempo and unleashes a powerful remake using the originals guitars to great effect. Oxlaid and Ometilde’s remix of A Strange Sea focuses on the powerful vocal, around which they construct something of a progressive house masterclass with glistening guitars, silky saw-toothed bass and a whole lot of soul. Weighing in next, Bootleg Ben wields his considerable talents on Whales. Originally considered for the opening track of the original album, Ben takes the atmospheric ambience and throws in some brilliantly balanced deep progressive beats to keep things rolling. 

“Geisterfisch differs a bit from the rest of the album as it’s slower than the rest and celebrates that psychedelic vibe.” Unfug tells us, suitably, theMaLm delivers a beautifully ambient and shoegazy version focusing on those guitars and more relaxed vibe serving as a wonderful ending to a sensational album of remixes. Each track compels us to embrace the power of the sea and its own small story, leading us into a personal world not just of the Whales, Shipwrecks or Poseidon, but also showing us what A Strange Sea this is. Where the Geisterfisch swim alongside the Gotteslachs, and men wrestle in the oceans wake readying their Harpune, whilst they Pray For The Lost... A Deep Sea And Its Rivals will leave you breathless once more.

Steyoyoke’s Family Affair series returns to mark its 6th release to date. The second half of this double release features remixes by Steyoyoke core producers Soul Button, Dahu and Nick Devon.
 
Dahu’s startling opener packs a tremendous punch. His rendition of Nick Devon’s ‘Devotion’ features a pulsating landscape of submerged arps and distorted bass controlled by a brutally efficient groove.
 
Nick Devon returns the favour by applying his talents to Dahu’s ‘Never’. A hectic smattering of percussions and toms set the scene for this aesthetic piece of throbbing techno as ethereal synths weave in and out taking the listener on a spectral journey through Neverland.

Soul Button delivers his second contribution to Family Affair 6 with his Aurora Remix for Clawz SG’s ‘Solace’. An inventive groove full of tambourines and shakers merges with blissful melodies providing a soothing contrast within the EP.
 
Finally, Nick Devon offers one for the soul in his Ambient Remix of Dahu’s ‘Never’. Building on the soul touching keys of the original, Nick Devon elevates the track to astral heights, displaying the more remote corners of his stunning auditory spectrum.
 
Steyoyoke’s 6th edition of the Family Affair project is a jack of all trades, boasting melodic soundscapes and explosive floor fillers alike.

An artist who epitomises the modern underground dance industry, Michael A is as gifted as is he is affable. Returning to Proton Music for fourth original EP in the space of twelve months, it is a genuine honour to welcome him back to the label with "Aura Tears".

From the central-southern city of Mazyr, rich in natural resources, Mikhail Akulich has mined from a rich seam of talent through his Michael A moniker. One of his country's most exciting talents, the Belarusian producer continues to find himself at the vanguard of the underground scene with his distinctive blend of "progressive house and techno". A prolific artist, some 650 production credits sit proudly next to the Michael A name; a profound achievement given a commercial debut with a clutch of original releases for Sterofaza and Fluro Music in mid-2012.

Since then a panoply of original and remix production material has been within the catalogues of some of the finest modern independent imprints, not least in the February 2017 "Micrologica" EP for Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat plus work for Darin Epsilon's Perspectives Digital and Cid Inc.'s Replug. Further original work for Mango Alley has also seen a high-profile remix from Australian icon, Jamie Stevens, while Akulich has also founded his own Genesis Music imprint to great effect and a regular vehicle for his production work. Hitting the Particles catalogues in late 2013, 2014's "Behind The Moon" was a notable highlight, as was March 2017's "Sapphire". Hitting Proton Music at the same time, a trio of original EPs have been spread across 2017 with "Bright Hope", "Symbol" and "My Style" all worthy of appearance on the flagship label. Now, Michael A returns to Proton with another original offering in the shape of "Aura Tears".

The title track is a beautifully sculpted piece that blossoms into a pulsating and driving anthem that is a perfect example of modern underground progressive house. Richly textured, floating pads and shining melody reveal themselves fully in the stripped breakdown before reaching a crescendo in the third movement, while a glorious bassline progression adds genuine purpose and interest in a work of great skill.

Revelling in similar melodic themes to its predecessor, "Ciklus One" is founded upon a strong rhythmic framework that supplies dancefloor interest in off-beat percussive cadence. Simultaneously a deep bass groove sparks low-end electricity while intelligent spacing within the mix and across the stereo spectrum highlights technique and mature production craft.

The final track continues the melodic tropes of earlier work as textured pads and shimmering motifs emerge over the seven-minute journey that coruscates brilliantly at the mid-point breakdown. Binding rhythm and melody together with bassline glue, a sublime groove keeps dynamism high accompanied by deep kick and ticking percussion.

Three new tracks find tears of joy rooted in Michael A's aura.
