Uncle Charlie Wilson & The Gap Band "Outstanding (King Most Redirection)

In 1982, Billy Noknees decided to delve into the darker corners of history with a track that was as haunting as it was groovy. Inspired by late-night TV documentaries, he penned Jack the Ripper, a disco-metal fusion that reimagined the infamous Victorian killer as a shadowy, almost mythic figure lurking in the foggy streets of London. True to form, Billy transformed a grim tale into a bizarre, danceable anthem.

The track was recorded with producer Victor “Gaslight” Grimsby in a dimly lit studio outfitted with artificial fog machines to set the mood. Billy, ever the theatrical one, arrived in full period costume—top hat, cape, and a fake bloodstained cravat—insisting he needed to “channel the energy of the Ripper.” His lyrics, delivered with his usual flair, included lines like, “Blades in the fog, the Ripper’s call, Fear and terror grip them all.,” set against a pulsing disco beat and eerie, echoing synths.

The session began smoothly enough, but tensions arose when Billy started re-enacting his imagined “Jack the Ripper dance,” which involved wild lunges and air-stabbing with a silver cane. Victor, who prided himself on keeping sessions professional, grew frustrated when Billy accidentally knocked over a mic stand and spilled tea all over the mixing console. The argument that followed culminated in Victor snapping, “Billy, you’re not the Ripper, you’re just a twat in a silly hat!”—a comment that left Billy fuming for the rest of the session.

Despite the behind-the-scenes drama, Jack the Ripper was completed—a bizarre blend of disco grooves, spooky melodies, and Billy’s theatrical storytelling. The track was quietly released as a limited 12" vinyl, with its haunting theme and offbeat style confusing both disco fans and true-crime enthusiasts alike.

Years later, in 2003, a single copy of Jack the Ripper was discovered in a Victorian-era sewing machine at an antiques fair in Brighton. Now, remastered with the magic of AI, the track is presented in its original sleeve—a moody design featuring a shadowy figure stalking through gaslit streets.

Prepare for Jack the Ripper, the disco-metal tale of history’s most infamous killer, where eerie vibes meet funky basslines in classic Billy Noknees fashion. It’s haunting, it’s groovy, and it’s ready to slice through the dancefloor once more!
