Quiet night at Lintulampi Lake (FI)

This is a stereo excerpt of my multichannel installation "Zijlijn / Linea Lateralis". The installation is an exploration of the underwater soundscape of the North Sea. For this piece I recorded at the southern (mainly coast of Belgium) and northern (coast around Bergen in Norway) borders of the North Sea. 

The North Sea is the busiest and therefore loudest sea in the world. The installation researches the difficult relationship between biological sounds and man made noise. 

"Zijlijn / Linea Lateralis" was awarded an honourable mention by the 2021 Sound Of the Year Awards in the "Composed with Sound" category.

Too Close For Comfort

This piece was created during the Soundset-workshop at the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent. The idea was to create a soundtrack to one of the works of the Stijn Cole exhibition. I chose for the work ‘Timescape’  For that work he photographed the sunset in Sint-Martens-Latem for a week. Every three minutes he took a picture. Afterwards he digitally calculated the average colour of the sky and the landscape in each picture, and put all these average values next to each other. The result was the series ‘Timescape’ where you can see the colours darken slowly, untill the distinction between sky and landscape becomes blurred, the horizon erased. This was the work of Cole that appealed to me the most. One little detail struck me. On one of the timescapes the distinction between sky and landscape became blurred early in the day, a very bright orange.  Just for a moment, 15 minutes at the most. It reminded me off a poem by Emily Dickinson, about an eclipse, a sunset in reverse. 

So I used similar techniques to cut up the sound into very little pieces. I used sounds of the museum, the rain on the museum roof, a recording of the poem and slowly disintegrate them into digital noise. A deconstructed sunset.

The rig was set on the edge of the pink canyon. And while setting up we were surprised by a thunderstorm. This is later in the recording, when you can hear the thunderstorm quietly (well, not that quietly) fading away into the distance, rolling its last thunders over the Pink Canyon

"That's it for tonite" only uses sounds I recorded at night, when the world is just a tad more mysterious, and very much defined by what we can hear. The compostion was originally created for the "Audiosphere - Sound Experimentation 1980-2020" exhibition, at the Reina Sofia museum (Madrid, ES), curated by Franciso López.
