Ahead of a massive tour throughout Europe and the US this Spring, Still Corners have released their seven-minute desert-noir odyssey, ‘Far Rider’.
 
With the sun at its peak a weary desert traveller picks their way across the soft sandy floor trying to forget a lost love or maybe a past best forgotten. Crystal clear guitar lines drift in and out as the bass weaves and snakes over a tight drum beat. Tessa Murray croons steady as a pulse, as the song winds like a caravan toward the orange horizon.
 
Tessa explains, “This song is about leaving, lost love and finding yourself somewhere on the journey, really it’s about redemption. I recently drove 6000 miles across the southwest to feel the sun on my face and think.  We used the dreamlike nature of the song to capture the landscape and a hypnotic feel to conjure up the long and lonely travel days.”

"Why don't you do another pretty one?" wonders this imaginary SoundCloud member who I made up for this description opening.  "You know, like 'Anyway' or 'Early Morninng Glow' or 'Take Time'?"

That is a VERY good question--thank you so much for your interest in Interbay and the creative process!  (I think every music producer secretly wants to know that people are interested in what they do.  Of course, I could be wrong--it might just be me who is this needy.)  

I've also been asked (by the same imaginary person) if songs are written and pre-planned or if songs "just come to you."  Well, I know that way back in the before times, every song that I either wrote or co-wrote were written and planned--though, certainly, they weren't perfect from the start and they'd need to worked on, polished, refined, even restructured until it got to something that everybody involved in that band or project was satisfied with it.  (I never really was in any band that just "jammed"...maybe that was my fault?)  

...but, with Interbay--I have avoided working on songs that I've got in my head (I feel like I'm saving them for when I feel stronger as a producer, that I can produce what I'm hearing in my head that those songs should sound like--and that will probably happen around the same time as I start singing on my own tracks.  In other words, "Someday.")  

I don't know if I "just find" songs--I'm still not much for jamming, even with myself.  (At my age?  Could be risky!)  Instead, I think I "discover" the songs that I produce, through the work.  ("Just chip away any parts of the big marble block that aren't part of the Interbay song, and you'll end up with an Interbay song.")  

This track, for instance, I thought sounded like it should be named "Pennsylvania" when I came up with a guitar lick that I felt was worth saving.  And today, it's called "Skywriter"--because I discovered that THAT was what this song was about, as I was putting it all together.  

I'm imagining an indie band, with a folksy female singer/acoustic guitarist, who is fronting a bunch of guys willing to do her songs, but would probably much rather do some heartland rock--Mellencamp-y sort of stuff.  I wanted to give a feel that this wasn't pieced together in a studio, but might have been played live, all together in that studio.  ("In that studio," we all said together.  R.I.P. Jim Abrahams.)  There's a hint of global reverb in there to sell that idea.  

Lots of unexpected (at least for an Interbay track) in this:  pedal steel, a synth that at first sounds like an overdriven saxophone, then a distorted guitar, then a very early analog synth--all in one section of a song.  There's a flute (there's even a flute solo!  Kind of...)  

It is a tasty slice of electronic indie-folk pop with beefy drums.  (So, look for that section of your friendly local record store!  "Excuse me, where is your 'electronic indie-folk-pop-americana with beefy drums' section?"  You know record store employees love questions!)

This might be one of Interbay's best structured rock/pop songs...so enjoy it while you've got it, there's probably some nightmarish industrial dance track that just stays on one three note figure for nine minutes on the way.  (Actually, sounds like a good idea...I might actually discover that someday soon.)
