Rising from humble beginnings like Icarus heading towards the skies, Singularity plots its course for the stratosphere as it heads ever onwards and upwards…but unlike Icarus this is a tempered and restrained ascent not an easy task to pull off but one that makes the impact so much stronger for it's subtle, ever evolving simplicity.

With a melody that comes on like a half-remembered memory and lingers long after the sound itself fades away, Singularity stays with you, slowly and carefully weaving its way around you while its drums beat a steady, forceful pulse and its percussion jumps in and out like Billy Pilgrim skipping thru time. The combined effect is something much more than the sum of its parts. Somehow this simple techno tune creates an entire world of its own and asks you to inhabit it for a while, losing yourself in the process..

On the flip side, Monoloc exercises an equal and proportional restraint in his take on things. Like a voice emerging from a faded dream, the melody peeks out behind a curtain of reverb and industrial drums compellingly foreshadowing its full potential. Growing from there, the atmosphere slowly engulfs the listener until finally the slow build up reaches its full force providing a fantastic re-imagining of the original with an almost romantic yet no less powerful conclusion.

The real deal deep house DJ & producer from Hamburg, Mr. Oliver Schories serves up two more tantalising tracks that really hit the spot. Clancy is first and is a brooding number with spooky bass sounds, wooden hits and a snaking groove that perfectly gets under your skin. Some tender chords add real emotion and it is another classy affair from Schories. On the flip, Kastil is more turbulent, with choppy grooves and nerve jangling chords all bringing a tense and paranoid feel to the dance floor. It is a big tune that will suck in anyone who hears it...

Hungarian duo Yvel & Tristian will release a new EP on Exotic Refreshment titled Eridanus. Two original tracks Holdem and Eridanus stay inside the melodic techno sound that is marked with haunting pads and quirky melodies and a straightforward arrangement. Canada-based Frenchman Mayfie makes his debut on French imprint Audio Perspective this month. The rising techno producer, host of Body's Up Radioshow and resident at Circus Afterhours in Montreal, is most certainly one to keep on your radar in 2018. Mayfie delivers 3 heavy-hitting cuts, offering up a staunch powerhouse sound with deft melodic touches. Title track 'Therma' is a tense mind-warper with a throbbing bass-line and a harrowing ensemble of fx coating the surface. 'Hoova' is a similar haunting techno composition, which utilises a monsterous build and an upfront groove in a minimal, bone-shaking drop. Track three 'Navy' is a more melodic affair, bringing to the fore an ever-rising arpeggiator and a set of booming stabs sounds. Closing out the release is fellow Frenchman The White Shadow (Suara, Einmusika, Chapter 24 Records). Taking on the title track, the established producer delivers an intense acid-riddled edition custom-built for the dance-floor.

Bridging instrumental tact with melodic mysticism, live act and DJ duo Hidden Empire present their debut album Mind Palace, the fruit of their labour of one whirlwind year. On Stil Vor Talent they find a welcome home, having already gained traction with several releases on the label as well as other renowned imprints such as Suara.

Fluid, atmospheric tracks set a consistently lush vibe overall, from the esoteric kickoff track Journey Into the Self to subtle warm-up tools like the oriental-instilled Hummus and Fafnir, or the couple’s first vocal collaboration Pure. Fellow Cologne singer Inga Nelke brings a touch of sensuality with her soft vocal chops atop a broken beat-infused melody accented with gripping piano chords.

But it’s in club tracks that the album abounds, found often in antithetical pairings, whether it’s the marriage of a Moog bassline and warm Caribbean rhythms in Detroit in Limbo or the juxtaposition of analogue and digital rhythms on In The Woods, created using sylvan recordings as percussion. It’s the title track Mind Palace, however, that reaches the apex of antipolar combinations, displaying a breakbeat-heavy lead doused in exotic vocals perched onto a steady bassline, underlining the artists’ knack for innovative rhythms.

A nod to the classic heydays of acid comes in the shape of Acid Flashback, centred around a massive synth hook courtesy of the iconic Roland 303, a tinge slightly present on the spiralling fierce cut Asmoday, albeit a fraction more subtle.

Energy is one of the key traits of the album, as Branko and Niklas conceive a copious amount of hard-hitting tracks that amplify and engage towards the second half of the record. Black Beauty oozes stamina from the get-go, its relentless groove guiding a subdued bassline and minimal elements towards the peak point. With Natural Takeover, a tech powerhouse with a tenacious lead and ominous vocals, the album reaches its darkest corner of the Mind Palace universe.

All in all, the artists showcase a plethora of straightforward tracks with heterogeneous sound aesthetics, where a closer listen can only reveal further and more elaborate depths.

Berlin house head Daniele Di Martino is next to step up on Get Physical with a pair of his perfectly dramatic dance floor weapons. 

This German producer has a stripped back and effective style, with plenty of focus given to his well programmed drums and expertly designed synth sounds. He had a busy 2018 putting out a number of well received EPs and remixes on labels like Bar 25 Music and Katermukke, while the brilliant brace he serves up here confirm his skills once again. 

Opener ‘Inception’ is a grand affair with thoughtful synths extending up into a cosmic sky. The rattling sheet metal drums drive things along as brooding bass lingers down in the depths. It makes for an all encompassing track that teeters on the edge of blowing up and keeps you locked as a result. 

The excellent ‘Element’ again has dramatic synths at its core, they change shape and bring a futuristic soul to the rooted drums. Echoing hits and supple melody lines all enrich the track and make it a colourful bit of late night and deep tech house.

These are two tasteful cuts that bring proper emotions to electronic music.
