The Bible tells us to put away unrighteous anger, but it also commands us to have righteous anger. Because anger is a response to what we love being attacked, righteous anger happens when we love God's glory and character enough to be angry when it's attacked. And ultimately, God's own wrath toward those things which attack his glory and character is consumed by his love for his people in Jesus.

In the highly symbolic Revelation 12-14, John records a vision of a great Dragon (the Satan) pursuing and trying to kill a Baby (Jesus Messiah), attempting to crush him with two henchmen, the beast from the sea and the beast from the land, symbols of the political and economic power the Enemy uses to try to destroy God and his people. But they are thwarted by the sovereignty of the Lamb who redeems his people and destroys his enemies.

Israel and Hamas' quest for the land of Palestine springs from a disagreement about which one is the true offspring of Abraham. But in the Christian New Testament writers like St. Paul argue that only Jesus is the true Offspring of Abraham. So whoever wants to inherit the land - whether they be Jew, Muslim, or Gentile, must do so through union with Jesus, son of Abraham and son of God.

Jesus, Israel, and Hamas - Oct 29 - Twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost

When a wealthy man goes on a long trip and leaves his servants in charge of investing and growing his property, two of them creatively and aggressively grow their master's wealth while the third conservatively hoards the money. The first two work for the joy they have in their master growing out of their deep faith in his joy in them; the third refuses to work because of his fear and hatred of his master growing out of his deep distrust of his character. And like the first two, our lives and work in Jesus' kingdom will thrive and grow when we trust in the joy he has in us belonging to him.

Paul believes that in Christ he has been made free from all human control, but instead of exercising that right to serve himself he gives that freedom away in order to preach the gospel free of charge. This call to living in Christian freedom for the sake of serving the other is at the heart of Christian community - non-consumerist relationships that live for the other, trusting in the love of the other, and fundamentally living in the self-giving love of God in Christ.

Moderns Westerners, of course, believe all places are “thick”: essentially closed off to the transcendent world. But at the Transfiguration Jesus reveals that there are no thin or thick places - wherever Jesus is is ultimate reality.

The command to rejoice in suffering seems impossible, but Paul says our suffering is not a destination but a path toward the hope of the glory of God revealed in those he loves. The guarantee of this future hope is the Holy Spirit whom he's poured out on those in his son Jesus, but also the promise that if Jesus went to such great lengths to die for us and initiate our salvation, he certainly won't stop until he completes the good work he has begun in us.

The opposite philosophy is liberty - the belief that humans need freedom from restrictions to flourish. Christianity, while definitely promising freedom from the burden of sin while also providing order and rules for living, definitely holds that humans flourish best when in relationship, especially the relationship all humans were created for - with the creator God in Jesus.

Our Sin, Our Savior, and Complete Joy - Apr 7 - Second Sunday of Easter

The question of whether Christians should go to church or not can only be answered by answering the question, are Christians the church or not.

Once again, Western-style individualism blocks us from even understanding the nature of the problem. The Bible insists that our highest value comes not from our individuality but from how our individuality flourishes in community. By ourselves we have no way of overcoming our personal weaknesses, but in community others cover up these weaknesses with their strength, as we do for them.

Unfortunately, Christians in America tend to be more individualistic than biblical: the notion that we can be Christians on our own outside of the Christian church creates a personal atmosphere of isolation and ignorance, but embracing the strange and scary reality of Christian community leads to flourishing and knowledge.

Why Go to Church (Ep89)

God wants us to stop sinning, but how can we even begin this impossible task? John's answer: look to the cross of the crucified Jesus who died to sin for us, look to the new creation where our destiny as full-formed children of God will become a reality, and look to our heavenly Father whose deep and forgiving love for us constantly woo us to himself.

The false teachers John is defending his church against made much of their own leadership, creating doubt in the minds of her members by causing them to selfishly look for the locus of their relationship with God inside themselves. But John draws them back by making much of Jesus' love for them, a love which works in their own hearts to pull them outside of themselves to love and serve each other, and find their status before God in his declaration of his love for them.

Who Are the True Christians? - Apr 21 - Fourth Sunday of Easter

For the past three hundred years it has seemed obvious to many modern Westerners that cataclysmic, global floods are impossible, and so the biblical story of the great flood has been seen as a legendary myth highlighting the vindictive judgment of the Bible’s angry God.

But this assumption fails to acknowledge the existence of great flood narratives spread throughout the ancient world - from the Cheyenne in North America, to the Chinese, to the Mesopotamians. How could all these different groups tell such similar stories? Is this a coincidence? Or instead does there remain in the collective memory of all these people groups the flood event described in Genesis 6-9?

This last option seems more likely than the myth that modern, scientific man is more right than the remembered and recorded experiences of all these ancient peoples. But the larger question is not, did the flood happen? But, what does the flood mean? And in the Bible, the great flood happens because the creator God simultaneously refuses to tolerate sin, and also loves to create salvation from that destruction. Like the Red Sea crossing, God drowns those who hate him, but saves - through that same water - those who trust him. The culmination of this truth is the redemption given to those who believe in the death and resurrection of Jesus, in the water of baptism.

St. James Lutheran Church was established in 1982. We are a church rooted on Grace Alone, Faith Alone, and Scripture Alone. And we are a body of sinners and saints focused on spreading the Good News in the Greater Glen Carbon community.

St. James is located in Glen Carbon, IL at 146 North Main Street. We are located across from Glen Carbon Village Hall and right next to Schon Park.
