Eclectics release 'Let It Pass' by Statues

Essex-based trio Statues return to Eclectics with another four-track EP. There’s no change to the MO – two exceptional OGs rock up to the party, each with a +1 in the form of a killer remix.

Rotunda is all swagger and shoulders. A mid-paced beast that swaps sharp edges for a slow roll, that rocks… but gently. The synthetic bass dives deep, providing balance and ballast while the upper register takes advantage of this free reign. Zither glissandos ebb and flow while guitar lines drift in and out, marshalled into time by a neck-snapping shuffle with a sense of slow, unhurried purpose.

Showing a similar, singular focus, is Gold Suite, AKA Bali’s Joey Fitzgerald. Opening the original up wide enough to drop in a piano, acoustic guitar and lead line licks, he builds a remix that is in equal parts balearic groover and 3am mover. The result is a certified banger that will see arms raised quicker than any armed bank heist.

Lessons, by contrast, sees Statues in repose. A simple cymbal pattern leads the way as organ, strings and bass join in, laying the ground for the mournful vocal refrain “The past is a lesson”. What follows is a blissful slice of horizontal balearica pitched perfectly for these times. With the world opening its arms to us once again, this is the soundtrack for us all to sway into its embrace.

Coyote take the remix reins, their deep dub adding lift to the kick and bounce to the bass. They pare back and stretch out, filling the space with found fragments and soft sonic furnishings. The result is a very different destination, but one that still wraps itself around you like a welcome hug from an old friend. Expansive synths and tightly echoed effects ride the wave of a way-out sound without losing sight of the original.

It’s a lesson to us all.

Statues - Lessons (Coyote Deep Dub)

Parisian label Chuwanaga proudly presents his first collaboration with Alina. On the double single I Don’t Belong Here / Breathe you’ll discover the unique flavor of Paris based Romanian singer’s first release, produced by label co-founder Saint-James. Available as Digital only on May 7th 2021.

On the funky sing along tune "I Don’t Belong Here", Alina tells her own personal story with a lot of sweetness, genuinely describing her inner travel from her hopes and dreams of the Parisian life to the frustrating impression of not finding her place. A universal feeling conveyed by Alina’s sultry vocals in a beautiful song with strong energy, backed up by a solid production and its thumping Moog bassline.

On "Breathe", Alina puts her sweet voice on top of a 808 Loose Ends kind of beat with a Juno 60 bass which might remind you of the cream of the Latin Freestyle era and its charismatic diva singers. In this song about artificial paradises, as Alina takes us higher and higher, between two clouds of smoke you’ll inhale a fresh gasp of groove and end up in a daze.

Alina comes from Timisoara in Romania where she studied piano and classic guitar before moving to Bucharest conservatory to learn pop & jazz composition, then to Paris. Usually influenced by singers like Amy Winehouse, Eliza, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill or Donny Hathaway, she’s experimenting something different on these two songs composed by the eclectic deejay Saint-James.

Celebrated Detroit composer, producer, sound designer and ambient pioneer John Beltran keeps up a busy 2019 with an expansive new LP on Delsin, his first music on the label since his albums 'Espais' and 'Everything At Once' in resp. 2015 & 2016.

The excellent nine tracker takes you on a trip though his typically serene and beautiful world right form the off. 'Alle Kinder' floats on gentle drums with beautiful synth melodies making for a heavenly atmosphere. The journey commutes through the calming pads and glistening arpeggios of 'A Different Dream', uplifting joys of the 'Himmelszelt' with its mellifluous harmonies and achingly perfect ambiance of 'The Coming Home'. 'One of Those Mornings' washes over you like the sun through a breaking cloud and the brain cleansing, pulse soothing goodness continues though 'It's Because of Her' and the elegant Detroit techno bliss of 'Perfect In Every Way'. The final two tracks close things down with a sense of classy contentedness, subtle celebration and inner joy that Beltran conveys better than anyone.

For every musician who tastes significant success, there are countless others who fall through the cracks: artists whose dreams of carving a career out of their passion were dashed, despite the quality, inventiveness and imaginative nature of the music they made. Most never get to see the music they slaved over get released, or a new generation of listeners appreciate the demos they worked so hard on for an extended period of time.

Mila Anatoli is one such artist. Had it not been for Spacetalk’s Danny McLewin grabbing one of only 10 acetates pressed of her early 1980s demo recordings from a record dealer in New Jersey, her remarkable story and impressively off-kilter music would never have seen the light of day. 

Yet Anatoli deserves her moment in the spotlight and a chance to tell her tale. Despite the hand-written information on McLewin’s acetate being almost 40 years out of date, Spacetalk managed to find to find her – Mila had married and changed her name some years ago making the search significantly harder.

The small amount of information the acetate provided led the search to celebrated jazz producer and photographer Hank O’Neal who had hung out with Mila back in the early 80s New York. He regularly took her to events and used his contacts to offer introductions to a mixture of local heroes and global music stars. Through O’Neal, Anatoli met Arthur Russell, Astrid Gilberto, Michael Moriaty and photographers Bert Stern and Berenice Abbot. At one point, O’Neal even took Anatoli to a downtown studio to watch The Clash making a recording with Allen Ginsberg.

Amazingly Hank still had many photographs of Mila taken during their time as friends in NYC and the images used on this new release have all been taken from Hank’s archive.

Completing the reissue package alongside the original songs Danny McLewin in his Skyrager guise and Jonny Rock have added their editing skills to two of the tracks.
