A Celebration of George Herbert

In this podcast, Revd Dr Sam Wells and St Martin’s Voices explore the metaphysical priest and writer George Herbert. Included are his famous poems which are set to hymn tunes, including ’Teach me, my God and King’, and ‘Let all the world in ev’ry corner sing'. The podcast begins with a setting of an extract from one of Herbert’s most famous poem ‘Heaven in ordinary’ by Andrew Earis, Director of Music at St Martin’s, written for the St Martin-in-the-Fields Advent Carol Service in 2011, and includes the choral anthems ‘Even-Song’ by Bob Chilcott and ‘Come my way, my truth, my life’ by Richard Lloyd.

St Francis of Assisi

In this podcast, Revd Dr Sam Wells and St Martin’s Voices explore Italian Catholic friar and preacher Saint Francis of Assisi. The podcast begins with a setting of perhaps the most famous poem by St Francis, ‘Lord, make us instruments of thy peace’, set to music by former St Martin’s organist Martin Shaw. Other musical settings pf words by St Francis include two contemporary settings: Cecilia McDowall’s 'I have done what is mine to do’ and Grayston Ives’ ‘Canticle of Brother Sun’. The podcast concludes with the famous hymn, based on St Francis, ‘All creatures of our God and King’.

A Hymn for St Cecilia

In this podcast marking the Christmas season, Great Sacred Music presents a thirty minute carol service, ‘Five lessons and carols’, a shortened version of format made famous in Truro Cathedral in 1880, and subsequently by Kings College, Cambridge and cathedrals and churches throughout the land. All the carols have been chosen by members of the St Martin’s community, and readings are by members of St Martin’s Voices.

Five Lessons and Carols

African-American spirituals blend the beat of African songs with the suffering of slavery in the American South and the depth of Christian faith. Some songs anticipate God intervening to liberate, echoing the experience of Israel in Egypt. In this podcast we explore choral arrangements of Spirituals by American pianist, conductor and arranger Moses Hogan, including Wade in the Water, I stood on the River of Jordan and Great Day.
