Some years ago, a tour brought me to London for the first time. I spent my time off walking up and down streets somewhat aimlessly, taken aback by how familiar it all seemed - names which I had seen again and again in Trinidad, Barbados, Grenada, Canada, Belize, Pakistan….anywhere touched by the rule of that far-flung empire whose nervous centre I was then traversing on foot. It was late winter and the weather was bleak and during my wandering I wrote this song of post-colonial homecoming.
