from the back empty street
to the pool with the leafs 
to the pot that you left on the porch swing

I was clinging to wine
as you smoked outside
I was humming but you couldn't hear me

because you were a ghost
that was holding me close
and breaking all my concentration
I looked through the glass
the light hit you, then passed
in front of me and out through the water

the curtains were wide
in the middle of the night
we could see the dim lights from the city

the view from the bed
and my crooked old lens
was skewed through you and the memories

because you were a ghost
that was haunting my bones
from the desert out to the ocean
with the waves by my side
the landmarks in your eyes
you were burning up and out to the water

the exhaust filled the air
the wind blew through your hair
until it covered up all of the sunlight

the haze filled my eyes
the burnt frames all flew by
you were an artist from the passenger side

but you were a ghost
and I was letting you go
and I drove straight east through morning

and I cursed all those nights
