Heave Deviance is the brain child of composer/producer Wayne Roberts. After the release of the critically acclaimed Heavy Deviance long player “A Slow Walk Down The Stairs”, Taffy producer Wayne Roberts packed his bags and left his long term settlement Nottingham in true Dick Whittington style, and headed to London town to exploit his new found fangles.
It wasn’t long before Roberts found new opportunities to channel his musical talents. From co-writing a West End musical with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to producing the dark seminal soundscape for Luke Scott’s (son of Ridley) creepy Specsavers ad, he has now set up Blip Audio, a music production company creating music and soundscapes for moving images. With recent syncs from Grolsch and Campari, plus compositions for various BBC and Channel 4 programs under his belt, Roberts is now set to release the long awaited second Heavy Deviance album, ‘Trouble Man’ out later in 2010 on StopStart Records.
The single, ‘Day to Day’ is the first release, a bass driven, down tempo, house tune with an infectious vocal melody, graced by Liverpool diva Lauren Surridge. ‘Day to Day’ was described by iDJ magazine as ‘the best house tune that Kate Bush never wrote’… a bonafide classic. Floor filling mixes come from the Yesking camp, while Michael Morph provides a more melancholic vibe. Orbatak brings a fresh dubstep mix, making this first release a collection of dynamic and exciting tunes.

Envy is 22 year old Nicola Varley, a kinetic MC from the UK’s rainy city, Manchester. Envy waxes lyrical over the cool, smoky beats of Medasyn, with a bold, unhurried flow that smacks of future stardom. Writing song lyrics at the age of 12, it wasn’t until the age of 15 that she developed an interest in hip-hop and decided to put her lyrics to use over rap beats. Influenced by artists such as Nas, TLC, Missy Elliot and Ms Dynamite, Envy developed a passion for rapping and began playing around with her flow developing her unique and original sound with every new track.

Her music profile was raised through involvement in numerous rap battles that took place in and around Manchester. Winning the acclaimed freestyle competition Battlescars in March 2006 brought Envy both respect and publicity, and led to an entry into the Scribblejam Qualifiers which featured some of the best battlers in the UK, followed by an invite to open the MOBO awards 2006. Envy stormed a string of gigs in Germany, London and her hometown, supporting 50 Cent’s G-Unit in November 2007 to promote the impossibly quick “Tongue Twister” single. She has also supported Kano as part of his Home Sweet Home tour performing in front of thousands.

“Set Yourself On Fire” is a devastating grime anthem with an incendiary chorus line, showing off Envy’s incredibly sassy lyrical nous. Rhys Adams and his Yesking partnership come correct with a slice of 4x4/ funky house action for track 2 with the dub on 4, while Heavy Deviance’s Dark Drum remix provides a moody yet driving alternative.
