Amanda Renteria is the Chief Executive Officer at Code for America, which is a network of people making government work for the people, by the people, in the digital age.

She is also the former Chief of Operations at the California Department of Justice, former Chief of Staff in the United States Senate. And a National Political Director for a large U.S. presidential campaign.

But, perhaps most importantly, it is Amanda’s second time on Stories from the Open Gov, which I suppose makes her an official friend of the podcast!

Sir Nigel Shadbolt is chairman of the Open Data Institute which he co-founded with Sir Tim Berners-Lee.

He is also one of the originators of the interdisciplinary field of web science; is the Principal of Jesus College Oxford; a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Oxford; and a visiting Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Southampton.

Pam Ryan is the Director for Service Development & Innovation at the Toronto Public Library (TPL), the World's largest urban public library system, featuring 100 branches, close to 1 million cardholders, and 10 million items that can be checked out.

Today Pam tells us how the TPL is changing in the 21st Century to provide Torontonians access to digital innovation hubs, checking out arduino kits, and even offering space for community groups to organize and host events.

She also shares a few stories on how the TPL has stepped-up during the COVID-19 lockdown to help foodbanks and those who do not have access to the Internet.

Rufus Pollock, he is the founder and president of the Open Knowledge Foundation, which is a network of not for profits in dozens of countries that helped to pioneer Open Data and continue to create a more open World.  They are responsible for creating the Open Data Index, Open Spending which is the largest open database of public financial information in the world, and CKAN, the World’s leading open source data portal platform.

Today Rufus tells us the backstory on how the Open Knowledge Foundation was created and how it was strongly influenced by the free and open source software movement from the 1990s, as well as a little known fella named William Tyndale. A scholar who was put to death after he translated the bible into English.

And today Jack will tell us the backstory on what the people at the ESDC went through in order to launch the Canada Emergency Response Benefit program (CERB) - atleast from an Enterprise IT perspective.

NOTES: As of June 20, 2020 CERB has processed over 8 million unique applicants, close to 16 Million applications in total since inception, and distributed over 43 Billion Dollars to Canadians in need.

In Canada and the United States, the Red Cross is mostly known as an emergency services organization, but what I’ve come to learn is that in many countries the Red Cross is a much more integrated agency in the daily affairs of their communities.

In the case of Spain, they help in job training and placement, social inclusion, environmental progress, and they even help school children with their studies.

And today Raquel will tell us about CruzRojaResponde Open Data – an incredible tool that she and others at the Spanish Red Cross created - using Microsoft PowerBI - to help visualize and understand the work they do, the people they help, and the impact they’ve had in Spain.

To top it all off, even though she is currently the Digital Minister for Taiwan, she officially retired about 5 years ago

And today Audrey will tell us her journey as a civic organizer, beginning with how she dropped out of school at the age of 14 to start an IT company and concluding with her involvement with g0v.
