Our September edition of the POOLcast this year comes from one of our co-founders, ANN. He rolled out his music carpet and provided us with a digitized tape recording for you.

Searching and finding is an integral part of life and especially the creative life. Sometimes you search without knowing what and sometimes you find without having searched. Nevertheless, both are neither the beginning nor the end of a definable or easily navigable path. Finding and searching are like gates in the maze of being and thinking. If we push open the gates in search of something specific, we can find something unexpected and immediately when we find what we are looking for, curiosity arises as to what is hidden behind the next gate.

We are happy to present something very new and unique for our october issue. rand, the duo for urban sensitive music for piano and electronics by Dr.Nojoke and Jan Gerdes, have provided us with an exclusive recording of an improvisation. rand have just released their first album "Peripherie", which they distribute themselves. A project that took over two years of work and is now available as download, CD and limited vinyl edition. This time they demonstrate that they are not only able to record excellent music in the studio, furthermore they are also presenting their vision of the fusion of piano and electronics in an improvised way.

rand merges the pure, acoustic nature of the piano with the twisted world of electronics, often breaking with expectations of normal listening habits. Unpredictably, the two seemingly so different musical and falsely pre-determined spheres can abruptly switch positions. Piano and electronics coexist on an equal level in all areas of the musical process. Rhythm, tonality and dynamics are not reserved for one of the two realms. The apparent boundaries between electronics and piano blur for moments now and then, only to appear tangible again a few moments later. This creates a constant tension that surrounds the recording from beginning to end. So it's worth taking the time to listen actively several times, preferably in different environments and states of mind, alone or together, to feel firsthand what the apparent tension between piano and electronics can trigger.

POOLcast 084 - GNILYF

For the conclusion of our seventh season, here's one of GNILYF's Melange Mixtapes.
Whether it's ambient, jazz, techno, electronic, musique contrete, classic or virtuosic instrumental music, anything can end up in these multitrack mixtapes. The goal is a journey through many emotional states, creating new perspectives with every playthrough and ever changing mindsets.

Sometimes after sixty minutes, the same feeling can arise as if you were looking back on an entire year. Isn't it strange how experiencing moments and remembering them can not seldom lead to completely contrary feelings. Even knowing this fact does not change its outcome. Experience changes us in such a way that we do not look at past things with the same ego as we look at future things. Repeated experience also changes our view of things again. The constant changes of our self are unstoppable and thus, with the necessary awareness and open-mindedness, enable us to experience ever new adventures, even in the most trivial moments.

On to the ninth season of POOLcast.

POOLcast 085 - Demiurge

At the end of the year we have a recording from Demiurge aka Demas, Thomas Bäz. He has taken advantage of the dark days and ventured on a metaphorical journey into the vastness of streams, fields and light. Modular Music.

The result is a session recording that creates a kind of mysticism in the course of listening. Magnetic emptiness is shaken by abrupt acoustic events, cryptic rhythms and preaching basses create spherical fields. Currents on the verge of eruption flashingly transform into prosthetic signs. An ancient lore seems to manifest, summoning a power that salivates in the very essence of the circuits for their imminent revival.

Await the awakening.

Comme je le clame haut et fort chaque fois que je parle de toi, tu es mon petit frère de cœur, et ce depuis notre première rencontre. Tu es aussi, et je l’ai découvert au fil des années, notre plus grand fan, j’en suis maintenant intimement persuadé.

Alors je me suis livré à une petite figure de style musicale pour ton birthday (Excuse-moi pour les 3 jours de retard. Weekend busy).

En parcourant ta page Soundcloud, m’est venue instinctivement l’idée d’un "virtual mix". Toi à la sélection et moi au mixe.  
J’ai téléchargé tous les tracks que tu avais likés, enfin ceux que l’on n’avait pas encore.

POOLcast 098 - Lumia Sylko

Our first POOLcast in 2024 comes from Switzerland and, like our last edition, is a live modular synth recording. Lumia Sylko is essentially an audiovisual project that uses the technical means and media of today to offer a platform for creative development.

Musically, there are almost no limits. Ambient, minimal, jazz, drone, electroacoustic and musique concrète are all components that find their way into Lumia Sylko's works. For POOLcast 098, Lumia Sylko has sat down at his modular system and provided us with a recording that wonderfully demonstrates what can be musically extracted from such systems. From hypnotic to groovy to dreamy, Lumia Sylko has created a thoroughly entertaining recording for POOLcast that we can recommend to everyone for the dark days.
