Ilan Volkov — conductor and musician. Served as principal conductor of the Scottish BBC Orchestra and the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. Founder and artistic director of the Tectonics Festival, a world-renowned platform for new and experimental music that takes place every year in Glasgow, Athens and Tel Aviv and has previously also taken place in Reykjavik, New York and Melbourne.

Ohad Fishof – An artist who works in the fields of sound, dance, performance and visual art. Began his artistic path in the 1980s with the band נושאי המגבעת and has since developed a unique body of work of time-based idiosyncratic art, in a sequence that includes stabilizers, musical works, video works, place-dependent performances and dance works.

The Language of Ghosts (Monologue)

Hello everyone! This is a demonstration of the sound design work I did for the Novation Peak. I created 50 patches demonstrating some of the new features that the v1.2 firmware update has to offer. My sound pack is available for free with the update through Novation's Components App. Select the Novation tab on that app to access them as well as GForce Software's free patches. 

The patches are performed with a mixture of Octatrack sequencing (using sequences from songs I have written) and live performance with a MIDI controller. I was inspired by artists like Delia Derbyshire and wanted to record little vignettes and sonatas using the Peak without other sound sources.

I made this recording so that friends can hear the sounds I made and so that other Peak users can get a closer glimpse into how I envision sound design. Please get in touch if you have any questions about my process or anything else related to this project and I will respond as best I can. 

The Novation Peak was recorded directly into a Steinberg UR44 interface. No external effects. Subtle mastering from Tokyo Dawn Labs software to balance recordings of different patches. Thank you for listening!

After last year saw the launch of the Stages of Grief series on Vaknar via its maiden release Convalescence, the second volume presented here will focus on the theme of consolation and is thus aptly titled Solace. Once more a variety of artists were selected to respond to the theme. Solace begins with an uplifting chorus of synth laden resonances, bellowing throughout the duration of ‘Lonely Cloud’ by Danish native Rune Bagge, who made waves via his debut LP which was released on Northern Electronics last year.

Previous Vaknar collaborators White Stains (Belgium), Appropriate Savagery (France) and Amethyst (Germany) further divulge in a certain sonic spectrum and mood that encompasses the entire A side of the release. The B side is inhabited by two contrasting compositions, starting with a piece by American composer J. Carter titled The Collapse of the Cheekbone is the Death of the Comité de salut public. Here the listener is presented with a solemn gust of layered keys which steadily develop in dramatic fashion before bursting into a hurl of feedback that over-tones the proclamations of a muffled voice. J. Carter’s piece presents itself as the peak of a tumultuous phase of grievance and thus the following and final composition on the release ends on an contrastingly tranquil note, presented by Swedish composer Isorinne, who shares a nine minute long composition of pure, virtuous serenity that commemorates the arrival of a new stage, (which will be further explored throughout the third and final instalment in the series next year).

Each cassette comes housed in a unique, hand cut J-Card, derived from a variation of B&W screen prints specifically created for the Stages of Grief Series at an Edition of 50.

These improvised musical pieces were recorded live in Brittany by Maxime Mouttet and Benoît Lefeuvre. 

They soundscape the fictional exploration of a chasm with crystallizing walls, remodeled by erosion through the work of salt and water over time. 

This natural process has guided their musical approach, mixing field recordings and re-arranged raw sound materials to carve them as a set of unique instruments, sometimes playing as a discordant ensemble, sometimes in symbiosis.

Benoît Lefeuvre & Maxime Mouttet - Incursion III [Ōtium]

This split release between ELEH and NYZ (David Burraston) is packaged in a heavy duty sleeve printed on both sides of the packaging and utilizing metallic inks. This is a first edition of 500 copies and a brand new full length from NYZ is being released at the same time via Important Records.

ELEH: This side is possibly the artist's most complicated electronic composition. It navigates myriad timbral, tuning and temporal processes while winding itself to completion. It was composed/constructed over a period of months in early 2019.

NYZ: Two crunchy microtonal drone meditations in mono, using techniques of digital FM and hybrid analogue/digital modular synthesis. FM60P::fbk1#03 is from a number of sessions recorded on my very battered SY99 recorded from 2013 to 2014. As the name suggests, this particular session revolved around using feedback in the FM algorithm. EML DRNPi was recorded as part of the 2015 Plum Island Sessions where I had a host of synths on loan from John Brien at Important Records. For this recording I used the EML ElectroComp 101 and my own 4 voice digital microtonal oscillator running a Lambdoma Matrix to make a hybrid analogue/digital system.

      Tod Dockstader's Aerial series, an electronic/drone masterpiece, is cherished among fans of the artist's work and this first volume is available in a double LP edition of 500 copies with 100 copies on clear vinyl exclusively for Imprec mailorder customers. 

     15 years in the making, Tod Dockstader's Aerial series is sourced from his life long passion for shortwave radio. Dockstader collected over 90 hours of recordings, made at night, and comprised of cross signals and fragments plucked from the atmosphere.

       Opening with airwave drones, Dockstader gradually allows elements to slowly come and go, summoning an ominous atmosphere of ethereal cloud clouds. Malignant placidity continues, giving the feeling of eavesdropping upon late-night audio activity not unlike discovering number stations while sweeping the dials. These sounds pull you in as their density and rhythms come and go. 
 
      Backward voices, deep echoing choruses of conversations flowing under the surface, ocean sounds, pulsing electro-rhythms, all seem to be created via the collaging of many hours of source recordings. A masterwork of collage and juxtaposition by an overlooked pioneer of American electronic music. 

Artwork by John Brien (Imprec) is inspired by the propagation of shortwave radio signals throughout the earth's atmosphere.

When ACL first started producing mixes, I knew that I didn't just want to invite artists and labels. We've always imagined ACL as a part of a broader community. As such I've often invited mixes from amateurs, from listeners and fellow critics. This mix is one of those.

Philippe Requena is a music lover who lives near Paris, and has been producing mixes casually for some time now, just putting them out once he's gathered enough tracks and samples. We will be featuring more of his mixes in the near future.

The first installment of my mixtape/audio collage series, this one was for my friend Brooke.  For each recipient I drew a tarot card to use as a basis for their audio collage, and for her I drew the dreaded Tower: the 16th arcana, and one that typically strikes fear into the hearts of those that draw it.  
But really, there is nothing to fear here, except the true knowledge of the Self: the Tower is a symbol of the process of alchemical transformation.

So, with that in mind this 90 minute audio collage is a narrative journey through the crucible of spiritual reckoning the Tower represents.  We descend into a tornado of madness and chaos, until from the broken pieces, understanding begins to coalesce: and we come out the other side, new. 

The only way out... is through.  Listen if you dare.

No one knows where or when was born
the Tarot, nor who invented it.
We don't even know the meaning of this
word, nor to which language it belongs
to. Some consider them an Alchemycal
Work, Astrological, Cabalistic.. but in the
first place Tarots are an Art Work.
Everyone, from Initiates of different
branches of Magic to Artists coming from
every Nation, everyone attempted to paint
the real Tarot: but maybe the real Tarot
doesn't even exist, and it is only a
constant research of a superior/interior
knowledge.
Behind the many significances of this
ancient Art, an intimate vision and a
personal interpretation are hidden: the
Real Tarot is the one that each creates.
From Europe to New Zealand, 33 artists
designed 61 cards, some altering the
already existing Major Arcana, some
inventing their own: besides the symbolic
meanings, each one is undeniably
enshrouded in a halo of mystery and
magic. In order to create the perfect
atmosphere, 7 sound artists shaped a
soundscape inspired by the artworks.

Störung started as a project in 2006 in Barcelona and has been growing ever since. The platform includes the Störung Festival, Events Label, Studio, Radio and offers also a range of different Workshops connected to this concept.
