Here is a track from 1971 at the Hollywood Palladium, when the Dead had returned to its original five member lineup. Jerry Garcia described the quintet as a "shoot-'em-up saloon band," and Pigpen's rendition of Otis Redding's soul classic, "Hard to Handle," conveys the more intimate, rough and tough sound from this transitional time in the band's history. The audience recording in the matrix is exceptionally good for this early era and captures the intense sounds filling the room. The crowd's rhythmic clapping after the climaxing jam conveys a spirited transference of energy during a heightened level of collective music making.
