AfricaNow! August 26, 2020 The Continued Relevance of Africana Studies 

Topic and Guest: In the spirit of commemorating WPFW’s 43 Years of Uplifting Black Life, Black August and as we continue to reflect on the Black Lives Matter movement AfricaNow! today features The Continued Relevance of Africana Studies Today.  The late renowned historian Dr. John Henrik Clarke in his article entitled “Why Africana History?” published in The Black Collegian Magazine in 1997 states that “To understand fully any aspect of African-American life, one must realize that the African-American is not without a cultural past, though he was many generations removed from it before his achievements in American literature and art commanded any appreciable attention. Africana, or Black History, should be taught every day, not only in the schools, but also in the home. African History Month should be every month. We need to learn about all the African people of the world, including those who live in Asia and the islands of the Pacific. ….”  

Howard University's Dr. Joshua Myers discusses the legacy of Africana Studies at universities and its connection to everyday life conditions of people of African descent worldwide.  This was from Dr. Myers’ presentation entitled “The Black Legacy at Universities: Do We Still Need Africana Studies” earlier this year during Africana Studies Week at Virginia Tech University (February 24, 2020).  Dr. Joshua M. Myers is Associate Professor in Africana Studies in the Department of Afro-American Studies at Howard University.  He is author of the recent book We Are Worth Fighting For: A History of the Howard University Student Protest of 1989, and serves on the editorial board of The Compass and is editor of A Gathering Together: Literary Journal.   Dr. Myers is also part of Africa World Now Project collective.
