Avadhūta (IAST avadhūta, written as अवधूत) is a Sanskrit term from the root 'to shake' (see V. S. Apte and Monier-Williams) that, among its many uses, in some Indian religions indicates a type of mystic or saint who is beyond egoic-consciousness, duality and common worldly concerns and acts without consideration for standard social etiquette. Avadhūta is a Jivanmukta who gives his insight to others and teaches them about his realisation of the true nature of the ultimate reality (Brahman) and self (Ātman) and takes the role of a guru to show the path of moksha to others.[1] Some Avadhūta also achieve the title of Paramahamsa.

A jīvanmukta, literally meaning 'liberated while living',[1] is a person who, in the Vedānta philosophy, has gained complete self-knowledge and self-realisation and attained kaivalya or moksha (enlightenment and liberation), thus is liberated while living and not yet died.[2][3] The state is the aim of moksha in Vedānta, Yoga and other schools of Hinduism, and it is referred to as jīvanmukti (Liberation or Enlightenment).

In Hinduism, the Atman, or soul, is one’s eternal Self. It resides in all living creatures, not just in this lifetime but all incarnations a soul will have. The Atman itself, gives the materialistic body life and is also all-knowing; since it comes from the supreme God, Brahman.
