"I met the lovely Kristina on the Lot Radio this past summer and realized she ran Weaponise Your Sound, a label whose experimental ethos I admired. When she asked me to contribute to @klarity_clinic, a soundtrack series for the sex work community, I jumped at the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone. 

I chose the theme 'Music for Transformation' as the past few years have marked a significant period of personal transformation. In late 2020, I unexpectedly moved home from NYC to Detroit due to health complications, and will be moving to Taipei next week. These three years of hermitude have allowed me to digest many of the epithets attached to my identity that I hadn’t fully grasped, and making this mix felt like the perfect close to this uncertain chapter in my life. I took the liberty of creating this mix mostly in Ableton, recording segments on my XDJs with the intention of honing my post sound design skills. 

This mix can be divided into four parts: The first traces girlhood in the digital age and is a bricolage of messy interludes – my favorite type of track to collect and a structure often overlooked in standard DJ mixes. The second section grapples with my experience of being a first generation American woman, contrasting the disillusionment I felt with my parents’ hopes when they immigrated from Taiwan. The third section represents the beauty and enormity of daily, quiet, and meticulous effort. The fourth is the culmination of everything else: a final metamorphosis of internal and external acceptance and love. 

While working on this project, I thought of @Bjarki’s Dekmantel podcast, @windowseeker’s Lot Radio set, Edward Yang’s A Taipei Story, Michael Haneke’s adaptation of the Piano Teacher by Elfriede Jelinek, and the track Inspire by Grubby – all influences that informed my creative choices.

Challenging myself to make one approximately minute-long jam with each of the plugins in the Arturia V Collection. Due to work, I ended up spending a little longer than a week on this one!

Arturia's Prophet V3 is an interesting beast - it simulates both the Prophet 5 and the VS, where the former is an analogue polysynth and the latter does "vector synthesis" (in practice wavetable synthesis). The 5 was easier to get started with, but I felt like the VS implementation had the more interesting sounds - I didn't quite get how you to set up envelopes between the voices for the VS, though...
