Berlin-based DJ and production duo Tale of Us take a step back from their busy touring and production schedule to compile the latest instalment of Renaissance's 'The Mix Collection' series. 

“We put this mix together in Mexico, looking out at a beautiful sea in a magical spot in the Yucatan, surrounded by friends and label mates as we recovered from an intense new year's and BPM rush. It was the perfect setting to take on something like this, looking back at the year behind us, not concerned so much by genres and boundaries as much as by assembling a musical picture of where we're at, where we've been and most importantly a little bit of where we're going. Each of the two mixes is a journey unto itself but together they can be seen as our musical chiaroscuro, reflecting a bit of the two sides of the way we think both about DJing and producing. It's hard to confine ourselves to just over 2 hours when there is so much music we've fallen in love with but this is the best reflection of this moment in time for us. We hope you enjoy it as much as we have.”

Throughout their first mix the duo move effortlessly between the driving aesthetics of Kollektiv Turmstrasse and anthemic highs of Scuba to more experimental and angular remixes from Baths and Four Tet. The second mix takes a distinctly more mininal approach, with the textures of Daniel Avery, Recondite, Robert Hood and Extrawelt's productions taking the driving seat and remixes from the likes of Donato Dozzy and DJ Koze switching up already excellent originals. Across both mixes Tale of Us have managed to balance the deep, melodic, upbeat and sometimes more challenging elements of electronic music through careful selection and programming to ensure both have the flow and finesse that listeners have come to expect of a Renaissance release.

Tale of Us are certainly no strangers to the decks, between throwing their own 'Just This' secret loft parties in Milan, regular fixtures at renowned clubs such as Berlin's Watergate, Ibiza's DC10 as well as live and DJ sets at festivals such as Sonar and Movement. Alongside this, their productions have caught the attention of Seth Troxler, Shaun Reeves, Ryan Crosson and Lee Curtiss, who released their debut EP on Visionquest in 2011. 

The Mix Collection series saw it's inaugural 1994 release from Sasha & John Digweed, who set a new standard for the DJ compilation format. Since then Renaissance has undergone a musical shift, with recent contributions from M.A.N.D.Y., Gui Boratto and now Tale of Us helping to bring the original spirit of the brand to a new generation of music aficionados.

We are up for an early spring this year at Art Vibes with a bright and sparkling 3-track EP by french producer Max Tenrom. Strengthened by intense touring and studio time since the release of Skydiver in June 2019, Max delivers his sonically perfect Lotus. 

‘Lotus' conveys strong emotions straight from the first notes. We are oscillating on soft waves, an aura of nostalgia sheltering us from the outside world. Reflecting on ourselves, we acknowledge a strong hope and feel at peace. How else can you feel when you're drifting on infinite seas, warmed up by fluffy sun rays. 

Warm sounds and organic noises describe ‘Far West' best. Breakbeat rhythms and chopped vocal stabs collide to forge an immense yet reassuring space. Smooth and prone to colorful imagination, this one is for the eternal dreamers. 

With ‘Tears', Max Tenrom merges his early sound signature with new dreamy sounds. The scenery is set through the arpeggio played on warm analog synths giving a slightly harder feel to the otherwise delicate jazzy beat. Wandering through luxurious woodlands, we hear hints of lush guitars. Distant, they drag deeper into a sumptuous and astonishing expedition.

When I wrote "Apart" early this year I didn't anticipate that there's only one interpretation in 2020... during lockdown music has kept me busy and I worked on various ideas across my favourite electronic genres.

Dameun Strange is an acclaimed sound artist, multi-instrumentalist, and award-winning composer. His body of work encompasses conceptual electronic and improvised electro-acoustic compositions that delve into the narratives and themes of the African diaspora, frequently incorporating surrealist and Afrofuturist aesthetics. Through sound and poetry, Strange's artistic aim is to articulate the beauty and resilience of the Black experience, drawing upon ancestral influences to convey stories of triumph and forge connections across the past, present, and future.

Notable Collaborations and Recognition

Strange has composed for notable artists and choreographers including Leslie Parker, Ananya Chatterjea, Joanna Lees, and Pramila Vasudevan. He has also been a featured performer in concerts honoring the works of esteemed composers such as George Lewis, Thurston Moore, and Henry Threadgill. His significant accolades include the 2018 ACF | Create Award and a 2019 Jerome Hill Fellowship. Most recently, he was awarded a 2022 BMI Foundation Carlos Surinach Fund Commission, resulting in his piece not running. (The Life of L. Alex Wilson) for flute and electronics, which was premiered by flutist Adam Sadberry at Merkin Hall, Kaufman Music Center in March 2023.

Strange is currently a graduate student in Composition at the University of Minnesota School of Music. He resides in Saint Paul, MN, with his wife, Corina, and their daughter, Ezra. Outside of his artistic pursuits, he enjoys science fiction narratives and has a particular interest in cosmology.
