"Adrift" is the first movement of a larger work that explores the dynamic nature of our daily rhythms––how life can push us closer, put us in sync, and pull us apart, as part of a mysterious and enchanting "manner of flowing."

Program note:

Recovery Swap was written through a collaborative project with fellow artist Benjamin Shirley. Over the course of the project, we both interviewed each other about our different life experiences, evolving identities, and values. As our conversations progressed, we discovered many unexpected bridges between the unique personal challenges that we each have faced and how they have shaped us as human beings. We both constructed our own works by microsampling the other person’s previous music. Through this process, we got to know each other’s art very closely and how our experiences inform the work we make.

The result of this project was one of the most organic collaborative experiences I have ever had, and the works we both made were extremely vulnerable and honest. Together we discovered a lot about each other and ourselves, and we realized how our separate identities can nevertheless be intertwined. Recovery Swap is my contribution for this project. This piece explores different definitions of recovery, based on our individual experiences with addiction and obsessive-compulsive disorder, and how our paths of recovery intersect.

The Terror (2018) was commissioned by Zeitgeist, a new music ensemble located in St. Paul, MN for their Halloween Festival. I had previously been associated with the ensemble when I was invited to participate in their composer's institute in 2017. Since then, I have participated on a few of their programs as a featured performer and very much enjoy their Studio Z, as a place for experimenting with sound. My journey into creating graphic scores began at Studio Z. 

The Terror is based on the novel of the same name by Dan Simmons chronicles the ill-fated journey of Captain Sir John Franklin and the crew of the HMS Erebus to the artic. I use the ensemble to evoke the frightening tale of isolation, starvation, and a beast. But for me, The Terror is also a metaphorical representation of how I have experienced White Supremacy in the Great White North: isolated, starving, and constantly fighting the beast.

I was trying to write an angry piece, but this is what came out. I decided to use that anger as motivation to continue to find and uplift the beauty. With all that is happening, there is so much beauty in the community, the many communities, families I belong to. This one is for all of you. 

F.A.M. (For All Mine)

Dameun Strange is a sound artist, multi-instrumentalist, and award-winning composer of conceptual electronic and improvised electro-acoustic works focusing on the African diaspora's stories and themes, often exploring surrealist and afro-futurist ideas with unique impressionism. Dameun is compelled to express through sound and poetry, the beauty and resilience of the Black experience, digging into a pantheon of ancestors to tell stories of triumph while connecting the past, present, and future. 

Dameun has composed music with such artists as Leslie Parker, Ananya Chatterjea, J. Otis Powell, and Sha Cage and has been a featured performer in concerts celebrating the work of George Lewis, Thurston Moore, and Henry Threadgill. He is a 2018 recipient of the ACF | Create Award and 2019 Jerome Hill Fellowship. Most recently, his work commissioned by renowned flutist Adam Sadberry, _not running. (The Life of L. Alex Wilson) for flute and electronics was premiered at Merkin Hall, Kaufman Music Center in 2023.
