Stand outs in the indie-rap haven of Minnesota, No Bird Sing combines the talents of emcee Joe Horton, drummer/producer Graham O'Brien, and guitarist/producer Robert Mulrennan. With Definition Sickness, the trio has maintained the integrity of their live-band roots while exploring a more produced sound that ranges from stark minimalism to lush expansiveness. 

The first single, “DON’T THINK”, is a brooding track where Horton shares vocal duties with SFR label head SAGE FRANCIS. Other guests on the album include FIX cohorts Crescent Moon (Kill the Vultures) and Kristoff Krane, as well as Sadistik, Chastity Brown, James Diers (Halloween, Alaska), Aby Wolf, Adam Svec and Molly Dean.

NBS released their eponymous debut to critical acclaim in 2009. Their 2011 follow-up, "Theft of the Commons", along with the US tour dates that followed, served to expand their loyal, burgeoning fanbase across the Midwest and beyond. 

Their SFR debut,  Definition Sickness, offers a meditative commentary on modern life, owing much to leftist political theorists like Howard Zinn as well as Eastern-leaning philosophers like Alan Watts and Lao Tzu. Musically the dark, transcendent instrumentation of the record creates a rich and varied soundscape that will immediately entice fans of multiple genres. Repeat listeners will be rewarded by both the layered lyrical themes and the ear candy that’s provided by the nuanced sonic compositions. 

"If you took away the vocals, you'd never know it was hip hop," admits drummer/producer Graham O'Brien. "We're just investigating the relationship between hip hop and other genres—taking the spoken, rhythmic word and putting it in other places."  

"That's what creativity is," vocalist Horton says. "It's coming to this point where you don't know exactly what you're doing and having to figure out what to do. The second you're not doing that, you're just rehashing old shit."

"It’s been a long time since I have sat down to say something about something I've created in any real capacity. For a few years now, I’ve shared with you some of the changes that therapy and self-reflection have taught me to make. These changes have given me peace. Well, first they brought me a lot of turmoil. Then they gave me peace. The process has taken me to a place where I’ve felt comfortable creating again. 

And so, I’m happy to announce: you are now hearing some of the fruits of that labor. We are starting with a song called “Silver Spoons,” which is really the only place fitting to begin. It’s a song that Alxndrbrwn did the score for. If you're wondering why I say 'score,' and not 'instrumental' or 'beat,' you’ll understand when you hear it. It feels like he gave me a piece of something that he’s seen before. It’s a warm and nostalgic song with a feeling of distant somberness - but the good kind of somber. Just like our teen years, right? 

I’m also very excited to show this artwork that Pat Jensen worked on. He’s so good at capturing the feeling behind the music. It’s always so fun to give him a concept and then see it come back better than you described it, like an idea that’s been brought to life. It really is a pleasure and a dream to work with him. There are clues all throughout the cover hinting at what the song is about, so spend some time staring at it before the song drops and unlock the secrets to the Cas-iverse. 

I appreciate everyone that’s ridden with me so long. I’ve never felt more confident in a song before. I’d be remiss if I didn't say that that confidence is also a sheath for the daggers of worry…or is that the fear of expectation? It’s been a long time since I announced something, ya know? But…It is my favorite song that I’ve ever made. Because it was so natural. I’ll try to make this announcement as natural as possible as well. You’ll see. I hope we feel the same. And there's more to come, both for this release and for the future.

I have a song coming out called "Joy."

It is about how I never felt joy in my life, because I have never allowed myself to feel it.

Sure, I’ve experienced happiness. Sure, I’ve laughed and I’ve smiled. But I never experienced joy until I stopped injecting pieces of the past into every emotion I feel, and instead experienced the actual moment in the moment. 

I’m sure I’ll be clowned by some for this, but the moment in my life when I came to this realization was when I was front row center at a Bon Iver concert with my son, my love, and my best friend. When I thought back on it, I experienced real joy simply because I was only available and present to the moment. I did not allow anything into my being that was not there with me. 

Now. I try to do that more frequently.  I used to *only* relate to my audience through anger or pain. I want to relate to you through more than that. And that’s what has been keeping me making music lately: the unfamiliar, the unknown reception that may come from approaching creativity from a completely new angle. 

Alxndrbrwn laid down yet another nostalgic piece that bounces along with deep bass and kicks off with horns that are the key ingredients that open up my joy receptors. We will release this through Strange Famous Records on October 20th. After nearly a decade lost in space, METERMAIDS return to Earth to team with producer ALXNDRBRWN & turntable titan BUDDY PEACE for A LINE IN THE SKY, their latest otherworldly transmission on Strange Famous Records, dropping everywhere November 10, 2023!

MM emcees Sentence & Swell are joined on the mission by SAGE FRANCIS, MOPES, CAS ONE, SEEZ MICS, JESSE THE TREE, and EARLY ADOPTED.

The first video from the album, "All The Smoke," directed by Tim Young, is one of multiple tracks featuring an appearance by SFR label boss and indie rap legend Sage Francis. True to the DIY-style of all things Strange Famous, everyone you see onscreen in the clip pitched in and shot their own segments, which were interspersed with additional footage selected by director Young. 

Metermaids mouthpiece Swell, known for his tendency toward quiet understatement, explains the concept of the clip with his trademark humility from his Brooklyn apartment: 

"Yo - let me break down for you fuckers how brilliant this video is."

He clears his throat, ferociously, and continues:

"The summer camp footage grounds the whole video because it features representations of children preparing for a productive life, which is what I think most camps are trying to teach. They're making fires, they're learning how to swim, they're doing things that are all bedrock to the human experience. It's a period in life that everyone who was lucky enough to have that sort of childhood adventure relates deeply to, because it's such a formative time. It really captures what the entire record is about: looking back with the honesty of hindsight, and realizing nothing's really changed - we're still those same kids trying to figure shit out in a hurry. Now we just got more salt than pepper in the ol' neck beard."

He pauses, contemplating. And inhaling... something. Deeply. 

"Also, most of us as kids didn't have neckbeards. Except maybe Sage. But that was on the inside." 

Neckbeards aside, the individual film of each member of the crew invites the viewer to glimpse a truthful version of their day-to-day goings-on in a way most fans don't get a chance to:

"The footage is clearly self-shot and distinct to each dude. For example, I'm outside being weird (which I actually do a significant amount of), Sentence is being a good father, like he is, and Sage is travelin' and performin', like he does. That was a creative decision, as opposed to a practical one caused by geographic challenges," Swell explains. As the performers are literally spread across the globe, in 3 countries and 3 states, "the footage isn't 'perfect,' and that just helps drive home the point of the record - the visual approach tells the story of the song, which is: it was hard being a kid and it's hard being an adult. Let alone a rapping adult. So fuck it. Give us errrrrrything you got." 

"All The Smoke" is a light-hearted look at some serious stuff: the paths we've chosen, the places they started, the choices that guide us from sunrise to midnight. Also, it's not a bad little anthem to holler along to as you get your recreation on, if that's your thing, as Swell reminds us: 

"And also I smoke a ton of weed, so if you have that, I will also take that. All the smoke."

"NATURAL BORN TROUBLE" enlists the help of none other than the confrontational comedian NEIL HAMBURGER for the drop, and features a snarling B. Dolan reminiscing on a lifetime of truancy. 

Some people go looking for trouble, and some never have to.  In "NATURAL BORN TROUBLE," Dolan let's us know the latter hasn't worked out all that bad for him.

B. DOLAN's "FILM THE POLICE" pays tribute to N.W.A.'s infamous "F*ck the Police," serving as a call to action for the digitized media movement while responding to the recent explosion of police brutality all across the world.

This free MP3, courtesy of STRANGE FAMOUS RECORDS, features a reconstruction of Dr. Dre's original beat, brilliantly reanimated by UK producer BUDDY PEACE. Label CEO, SAGE FRANCIS, opens the song by picking up the gavel where Dr. Dre left it 23 years ago, introducing a blistering, true-to-style flip of Ice Cube's original verse by SFR cornerstone, B. Dolan. TOKI WRIGHT (Rhymesayers Entertainment) follows up by stepping into the shoes of MC Ren, penning the people's struggle against cops as a case of "Goliath Vs. a bigger giant." Finally, Jasiri X (Pittsburgh rapper/activist) rounds out the track by filling in for Eazy-E, reminding us that police brutality disproportionately affects poor people of color.

The recent passing of rap legend Adam Yauch (MCA of the Beastie Boys) stopped us all in our tracks and set a different tone among the hip-hop community in 2012. As a result, we've decided to put bravado aside for a minute and leak a song that's fit to honor his passing and the moment. 

"STILL HERE" is HOBV2's album opener and acts as a mission statement of sorts. Here is what B. Dolan has to say about it : 

"<i>In 2010 my father was diagnosed with an extremely aggressive form of lung cancer and died within the span of 8 months.  All of this happened at the same time SFR released 'FALLEN HOUSE, SUNKEN CITY', and I embarked on the most ambitious touring schedule of my career. 

Needless to say, that year was devastating in every way. For the first time since age 12, I found myself questioning what I do and considered walking away from it. I've always taken pride in the 'dues paid' for my art, but in the face of a loss that great, everything can suddenly seem too awful, too futile, and too difficult to continue doing. 

The beat used for "Still Here" was literally one of the most important parts of finally pulling myself out of that tailspin... Something about those bagpipes or whatever that sound is that Buddy sampled. I remember listening to it for the first time and feeling the hair on the back of my neck stand up. 'They haven't killed me yet.' is the thought I immediately had when the beat dropped, and everything followed from there.</i>" 

Rest in Peace to MCA and all of our dearly departed. Through the impact they've had on our lives and the legacy they've given to the world, they're Still Here.

BACKGROUND STORY:
As it is World AIDS Days and I have thought about these children every single day since being acquainted with them almost two years ago, I decided that I can no longer sit on this song. In January of 2011 I visited Durban, South Africa to help mentor and provide care for HIV-infected children. For me, it was a crash course education on their situation, culture, history, and various forms of treatment (or lack there of.) With a reported 5.6 million people living with HIV, South Africa has the highest HIV infection rate in the world. That is mainly due to misinformation propagated by the government as well as the people's lack of access to education and proper medical care. With so many people dying of AIDS in this area, many children are often left to fend for themselves in overcrowded "orphanages", many of which have no electricity or running water according to what I witnessed. 

My trip to Durban and the surrounding rural areas was organized by people who were filming a documentary on a community of people who were receiving alternative treatment along with their normal ARV (anti-retroviral) treatment. I joined a group of national and international poets whose task it was to make a connection with the children and communicate their story to the world. Toward the end of my stay I wrote a song called UBUNTU (Water Into Wine) which I was initially hoping to release as a companion piece to the film. The documentary will probably do a much better job of explaining the vast array of emotions we all went through, but as it still isn't completed I figured it might be best to just release the song now. 

The artwork for UBUNTU is a portrait of Nonoti, one of the younger girls who made a deep and everlasting impression on everyone she met. We lost Nonoti to HIV-related complications earlier this year, so along with the children I name in this song, and all the great people I met during my stay in Durban, a special dedication goes out to her (R.I.P.) 
If you're ever given the opportunity to visit Africa and provide a helping hand, I highly recommend it. You will learn more than you could ever imagine about yourself, humanity and the world in general.
