Strange Interactions Vol.1 - '5x5'

Strange Interactions is a DJ/producer-duo, label and party based in Naarm co-founded by Margarita Bassova (RITA BASS) and Yang Chen (Yangos) in 2021.  

As a DJ-duo the pair have two aliases: Strange Interactions and Strange Attractions. As Strange Interactions they manoeuvre the darker side of underground electronic music ranging from drum and bass to dubstep, UK bass to IDM and all the dark and murky corners in-between. As Strange Attractions they play with lighter sounds they love, with a particularly affinity for left-field house, chubby electro and jazz. 

The label focuses on uplifting female and GNC acts in the music industry, giving creatives the space to share their creativity both locally and eventually globally. SI is also very interested in an artists intention behind their creation, and have a particular fondness for lifting artists who share a strong purpose whether it be sociopolitical, philosophical, personal or emotional. The first release on the label is set for May 5th this year.

Strange Attractions Live at Neurotiq Erotiq

'Shadow of the Tomb Raver' is the first installment of the SI mix series, coming in fast, hard and hot from new Naarm duo @callconnect. 

Composed of Tanya (@t-n_dj) and Monique (@moniquearaujoratedm), Call Connect have prepared an hour of juicy leftfield tech, hard-hitting breaks and 4-to-the-floor trance-inspired acid that begs to be moved to alongside the loudest speakers at your disposal. Both brimming with talent in their solo projects which includes being well-seasoned DJ's, there's no shock that joined together the pair has already become such a formidable force in the dance community, which this mix does not shy away from reminding us!

For this comp, in the depths of the pandemic, we asked five producers to respond to the prompt '5x5'. 

We know what you're thinking. What the heck does that mean? To say we know answer would be a lie. Ambiguous and indeterminate in meaning, '5x5' is a phrase that originates from militating lingo used when describing clarity in radio signal. Though since we reject the institution of the military, we chose instead to consider how the character Faith in Buffy the Vampire Slayer uses it constantly as a response to the question "How are you?"

Still lacking clarity in the show, we knew we had to inject our own interpretation to the phrase. We chose to understand it, from her perspective, as "surviving amongst the chaos". And thus we asked our five producers to respond to the prompt of "surviving amongst the chaos", particularly insofar as it relates to the last few years of the pandemic.

The outcome is 5 emotive, hypnotising and quite different tracks that show the depth of talent of the artists.
