JWM - The Question Remains

What if sonic practice were not only artistic expression, but a mode of critical reflection — a way to generate knowledge about the positionality of both producer and listener?
To explore this, I invited the artists I interviewed to contribute sound samples — fragments from their production process — to build a collective sound “database.” With this samples gbw9, Melag0m, Kurzschluss, Mahée and HAUSVRAU produced soundpieces - which are released in the format of this compilation.
Here, sound is activated as a method: both a tool of knowledge and a relational medium. The resulting sample pack reflects diverse sonic practices and acts as a collaborative, affective archive.

Infestation as Sonic Resistance
I use the term infestation to describe how certain practices — deemed disruptive by dominant standards — disturb normative structures, much like weeds invading a manicured garden. Infestation stands for persistent, collective disruptions that challenge the status quo.
This concept ties into anti-capitalist modes of music production. By embracing collaboration, shared authorship, and relationality, the sample pack resists neoliberal values of individualism and competition. It becomes a sonic commons: a space for co-creation, not extraction.
INFESTATIONcan be thought of as a harmful seed, a seed that grows subtly, slowly. The sounds creep in sideways — rough edges, broken rhythms, distorted textures. Infestation is when sounds start growing in the cracks. Cultivated through collaboration, Infestation values disturbance, tension, connection, shared creation and finding new paths.
Some artists in this compilation are boycotting Spotify due to its investments in the arms industry. In solidarity, we are releasing the project exclusively via alternative platforms like SoundCloud and Bandcamp.

After his appearance on the “Rough Treatments part 1” compilation, Shrouds returns on the label leading this next session. His "Pagan Blood Rituals" is a powerful package of atypically structured tracks. It inescapably immerses you into its raw, ritualistic scenes that shake the fundaments of faith.

With Heresy of Ignorance, the ceremonial stage gets a successful sound check. Buzzing and droning begins this delicately dark dub. Sonic fragments of the organic blended with the metallic drift above the echoing pounds of drums. The drumming dies off only shortly until Pagan Blood Rituals, a crystal clear clash of pagan percussion, follows with a reverberated heartbeat pulse. Angelic yet demonic singing preludes a snappy shift in the percussive pace that draws the blood from your brain. Drop for drop, beat for beat. Litany of Curses replaces the empty space in your brain with more heathen horror: the fiendish voice returns for a duet with a deeply distorted guitar, guided by glitchy goodness, a broken pattern of bass kicks and distant drums with shout-like sounds.

Matriarchy Roots digs up the pagan legacy, preserving its original power while pushing it in a new direction. The ritual gets re-packed in thick layers of gruesome grit, filled up with fresh blood, and tied together with an extra dense tension. The last piece of heathen heritage, Pagan Curses, is left by Zosima. Merging A2 and A3 into an entirely new piece. This occult oddball of a track squeaks, squelches and screams a way into your skull to stay there until the end.

HANDS proudly welcomes one of the hottest acts on the current industrial techno circuit. The Toronto based duo MDD is the alliance of techno producers Measure Divide and Dolgener, who pursue a distinct passion together: The dark and dirty and intensely rhythmic “Reverse The Contrast” is a collection of tracks that defines their diversity and ability to express their aggressive, distorted, and edgy sound reflecting on today's maddening world. Discover old and new school industrial influences in a very unique combination, laid out with highly skilled production in ten tracks around the 6-minute mark, food for thought and pure physical stimulus at the same time, contemporary club grub galore.
What started with intense recording sessions in 2015 became a live act in 2017, which has led MDD to perform alongside the likes of Orphx, Ancient Methods and Perc already; and in 2018 they have released two 12” vinyls to great acclaim. While industrial and techno have crossed over massively in recent years, from both camps, the question may arise, how does one add something new to the style? MDD succeed in nailing that objective, with an album that oozes euphoria and authenticity – with an innovative combination of sounds: From their techno heritage they take the rhythmic clue, a relentless, capturing backbone laced with substantial groove. And at the same time, they pay due respect to industrial traditions that by far precede the crossover wave of recent years: Tracks like “Crushed”, “Underlight” or “Valium” focus on unadulterated rhythms and noise chops with big washes of distortion; “Breath”, “Dives” and “Submission (featuring AADJA)” feature actual, albeit heavily treated vocals, and addictive melody hooks, thus even hinting at the times when tracks were actual songs. But there’s reconciliation at hand - “Grind” or “Second Injection” reveal their techno heritage through the whipping snare sounds and thumpy kick drums. And then it’s all in the same way head-nodding, stomping goodness. Contrast and reversal, past and present, MDD play with seeming antipodes and achieve something ultimately enjoyable!
