Maya Q (@mxyi) releases her debut EP for Scuffed Recordings, weaving together her own unique take on influences from across the UK dance music spectrum. The New England-born, London-based DJ and producer has been building momentum throughout 2021, both with her productions and as a resident of the Co-Select collective. 

The ‘Spiral’ EP follows Maya’s appearance on the Scuffed Presents 005 compilation in early 2021 with her track ‘Belief’, which saw support from Jaguar and Jess Iszatt on BBC Introducing, among others. 

Since then, Maya released her ‘I Just Wanna’ EP through DJ Pitch and Simkin’s All Centre label, which further established her esoteric production style and her place as an artist to watch in the UK’s electronic music scene. 

On the EP’s title track, Maya comes straight out of the blocks with a jungle-inspired warper that pairs heavyweight bass with an unearthly melody and frantic breaks. 

Next up is ‘da2’, which eases off the pace in favour of atmospheric effects and chiptune-esque synth work. 

Closing out the release is ‘Drumpack’, with Maya’s eerie melodic pads and veering synth line dancing over a skippy garage-inspired beat, before introducing a grinding bassline in the second half of the track.

Maya Q - Spiral EP (Previews)

Today we premiere an excellent experimental yet club orientated dance-floor tool from Dublin based DJ and producer Outl1er. This fit’s somewhere between Skee Mask, Burial and Blawan and it’s an impressive second release from the budding producer.

Irish native Outl1er returns following his debut release on SafeHaus Selects (SS001), presenting his most accomplished body of work to date. Drawing on elements of Jungle, IDM & Bass Music, Outl1er blurs lines in his three track EP “Lethe” and offers his interpretation of the juxtaposed relationship between hard and soft sound palettes.

We premiere the second track from the ‘Lethe’ EP. Dancing around the 170BPM spectrum “Playtime” takes no rush in its climax and delivery, offering a warped version of nostalgia met with quick cuts of playful percussion.

The track is accompanied by warped music video shot around Dublin that is reminiscent to some previous videos from Aphex Twin and Squarepusher, which is always a good thing.

The full release is out on October 22nd which is up for free download on his Bandcamp and can be streamed on his SoundCloud.

Social Sport lands on Club Unique with In Vitro / Ex Vitro EP following his 2020 release on fellow Ōtautahi label Echo Train Records. CU011 sees the enigmatic producer continue his exploration of breakbeat, garage, electro & trance while pairing immersive headphone experiences and dance floor euphoria. 

‘In Vitro’ offers a fleeting introspective journey into a myopic haze of acid lines, saturated breaks and dub chords. The aperture widens revealing a more extroverted and energetic scene in ‘Ex Vitro’. Finally, the release closes with an emotional, sub-rattling remix of In Vitro by local bass cadet Shli.
