Sometimes a gift can take a lot longer to deliver than you would hope. 

You can’t find the right tools to properly package it. 

Or it’s not as shiny as you think the one receiving it would like it to be.

Jimetta Rose began this journey in 2014. Her and House Shoes had linked up for “Castles” on his Let It Go LP a couple years prior. ‘Shoes had started a record label, Street Corner Music, and launched the label with a series of ten handcrafted beattapes from relative unknowns, “The Gift”.

He had an idea for a full length SCM project with Jimetta, where they would choose one beat from each of The Gift volumes. Could be crazy. 

So they got to it, going through the series and choosing the tracks that elicited responses from the pair. After a few hours they had the backing sonics for Jimetta’s own volume of The Gift. 

They began meeting at Tenacity’s small studio apartment in Glendale. She would record her vocals in a closet, some hip-hop shit if there ever was any. The songs were coming out incredible, with a few very out of this world moments included.

With all the vocals now recorded, the next step was to mix.
This was a pivotal learning point for all involved. See, The Gift was dusty. Grandma’s basement dusty. Rusty two-track wavs at best. In some cases mp3s. No stems to properly separate and balance the production with the sometimes 30+ tracks of Jimetta’s vocals. So it went to another engineer, and another, and another.

Then it kinda just sat there. They kinda gave up on it. Years had passed. It hadn’t gotten any better. One of LA’s best engineers said he couldn’t get it anywhere near a space he would want to put his name on. Fuck.

Shoes got a lightbulb one day and sent it to Mags, his homie from back in Detroit who was the in-house engineer at The Disc in Eastpointe for over 25 years. He definitely had strong experience dealing with similar situations over the years.

So that bring us here. Jimetta Rose - The Gift : Around The Way Queen. Royalty from the hood. Dirty soul at it’s finest. The Queen surrounded by her court, Nameless, Dert Beats, EXT. TUAMIE, T-White, Cream Of Beats, Shoes, Raj Mahal, Denmark Vessey, DRUGS BEATS, Josef Leimberg and I-Ced.

It took a very, very long time.

But your Gift has arrived.

Stro Elliot has risen to prominence as the percussionist for The Roots and was previously a producer and MC for The Procussions. Long before being a nightly part of The Tonite Show with Jimmy Fallon as a part of The Roots, Stro released a collection of vaulted tracks called “Stro’s Old Beat Farm”. This collection of tracks were created between 2004 and 2010, and gave a glimpse of greatness to those that scoured the internet for the best in beats. In 1997, Jay Dee was the still new kid on the block. With the success of singles like Runnin' (Pharcyde), and Stakes is High, he had his own undeniable sound, but the majors still weren't sold.
This is proof of that.  
Jay was solicited by a lot of majors to do remixes for artists on their rosters. Time and time again, they would go with someone else. 
The joints he was coming up with were fucking nuts, but to no avail. In one case, he was led to believe that one of his mixes got thru, only to see another producers remix when the 12" showed up at Record Time. 
I told him fuck it I wanna put it out.
I had never put a record out.
Got an investor. 
Then I made a phone call.
Chris Manak, aka Peanut Butter Wolf, was my rep at TRC distribution in California. I was working at Street Corner Music ordering records from him every week. I got the #'s 
from him. Sent the masters over and we had a record.
The first pressing was on blue vinyl. Limited to 1500 copies. 
Gone.
Second press was on green vinyl.
Gone.
I also learned to listen to test presses on multiple turntables.
There was a skip in the middle of the fucking Woo Hah rmx that did NOT SKIP on my 1200. Swear to god I had the onlt 12 that could play that shit. It skipped on EVERY other 1200 turntable in the world. Fucked up. Check your test pressings on a few setups. But, that's fixed now. These records go for $100 plus on the internets these days. 
Remastered by Dave Cooley directly from a sealed blue copy.
Why? Because the plates broke at the plant, and I lost the master in a flood 3 years later. That's why.

On Thanksgiving 1989, Kmart employee and audio enthusiast Mark Davis wandered behind the customer service desk to check out the store’s sound system, which looped muzak and top 40 plus ads and announcements under the banner of “KMRT, The Kmart Radio Network.” When he found last month’s tape hadn’t been thrown out yet, he pocketed it and made a habit of doing this, collecting 56 tapes from 1989-1992.

In September 2015, Davis uploaded the tapes to archive.org with the humble intention of preserving them. But within a few weeks he became an internet celebrity among obscure media fans and supplemented the collection with reel-to-reel tapes from the 70s and 80s thanks to Tom Schwarzrock, who acquired them serendipitously along with a deck he purchased. The tapes are like a consumerist time capsule, a vaporwave trove of eerily familiar corporate ephemera extracted from its original context and purpose.

Similarly, Attention Kmart Choppers is composed of pieces from this collection chopped up, resculpted, and mosaicked together by Juicy The Emissary, forming a new, distinctly contemporary sound while inheriting a haunting nostalgia that provokes memories burrowed deep in the subconscious.

Originally hailing from Florida, Ghost McGrady headed out west and posted up in Koreatown, Los Angeles where neighbors and police frequently complained of a loud smell and an even louder stereo system blaring the wide spectrum of vivid sounds that would ultimately come to form the beats throughout this album. This is a collection of songs composed over the past four years (2014-2018) that form one coherent thought: Believe. Each beat was created with an open mind and a ‘fuck the popular sound’ mentality that comes from years upon years of sample chopping and sound design experience dating back to Ghost McGrady’s genesis at age 11 in his darkened bedroom.
