Anthoney Hart is hardly a newcomer. Cutting his teeth spinning hardcore, jungle and D&B at legendary pirate radio station Rude FM, Hart eventually began producing under the Imaginary Forces moniker, channeling his early influences into noisier, more abstract territory. As Imaginary Forces plumbed the depths of abstraction, Hart was keen to find an outlet for dancefloor material, and that’s where Basic Rhythm comes in.

Hart wanted to reference the hardcore and jungle he grew up obsessing over, but not simply as an exercise in nostalgia. Avoiding breaks altogether, he went back to the samples that littered the genre, reframing them with contemporary rhythms. Raw Trax is not an attempt to recapture the sound of jungle or hardcore, but a new twist on a familiar setting.

This isn’t a dull academic experiment: Basic Rhythm was always intended to be fun to listen to, fun to dance to and fun to mix. Raw Trax delivers in spades.

hashtag irl is an ode to today. It is a reflection of the internet frenzy which has taken over our lives, and which has imprisoned us in a virtual reality, where we each justify our existence through the approval of others. How many likes? How many followers? Never enough, so it seems. 

The constant desire to increase our online status drives us only deeper into an isolated world of narcissism, where our thoughts are watered down to a common denominator of hashtags, selfies and internet-speak acronyms. We don't really care about each other, we only care about how much we 'like' each other. The anti-social reality of 'social media' is all too ironic.

The repetitive, robotic and melancholy vocals of hashtag irl symbolize the relentlessness with which the internet now dictates our lives. They also pay homage to Kraftwerk's Computer Love - the original song about the rise of computers in modern society, released back in 1981. 'Computer love. Another lonely night. I don't know what to do.' It seems not much has changed. 'Hashtag alone. Hashtag follow me. Hashtag please follow me.'

SHALT - The Treatment

Özcan Ertek AKA Seretan has a master's degree in sound engineering, and that technical knowledge and capacity for manufacturing immersive soundscapes shines through on his new EP 'Live In Dreams.' Hailing from Turkey, the 2013 Red Bull Music Academy alumnus has released several records on Istanbul’s Loco-Motive Records as Jungleskin but was relatively quiet since 2011’s 'Moon Junk' EP under the name soundcollage. However, Seretan remained active during this period with his studies and various sound installations. Now, the latest EP showcases his interest in the disorientation of musique concrète alongside a spiritual ambience. 

The entirety of 'Live In Dreams' is suffused with warmth, drifting somewhere between shuddering textures and more placid synthesizer music. "The Open Door" is especially luscious, bringing to mind East India Youth and a hint of Terry Riley with its breathy samples and welcome instrusion of clanking found sounds, repurposed into pinpoint percussive detail as the song evolves. It's brief but memorable, especially as birds scatter shrieking through the smoky orchestral outro. The individual elements are mechanical, yet as a whole "The Open Door" feels utterly natural.
